PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This unique five week publishing program constitutes a full term of interdisciplinary, cross-cultural study with total immersion in the local cultures of the eastern Sicilian coast and Florence. Students and program leaders travel together as a community of scholars in Sicily seven days a week for two full weeks to collect and research travel photography and writing. Participants return to Florence for a three week academic session to refine the research that will be used to create a travel guide based on cultural exploration through the five senses. By the end of the academic and field experience, students will produce a book which will be published by FUA.

PROGRAM LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The academic context of this program is realized largely through formal lectures, independent study and group work. Thus, during a study-abroad term of this nature, much of the learning happens experientially. Students will succeed to the extent that they focus clearly on their own learning outcomes, guided by the program objectives & instructors. By the end of the study-abroad term, students should have a comprehensive understanding of the geo-politics, history, religions, and cultures including art and literature of the areas visited. Students will have gained new insights into their own worldview and personal identity.
