Sicily: Pearl of the Mediterranean
Taormina is Sicily's main tourist destination. It stands 200 meters above sea level and looks down onto the Ionian Sea like a terrace, the prettiest you have ever seen. Over the centuries, this place has fascinated wretched poets and writers and restless painters who decided to put down roots here, maybe so they could purify themselves by being in contact with such beauty and Nature or attracted by the unique, refreshing climate that makes it seem like it is always springtime. Siracusa has forever depended upon the sea, spreading out around the island of Ortigia, overlooking a wonderful bay on the east coast; its name is synonymous with an ancient Greek past, a series of valiant tyrants, the rivalry between Athens and Carthage; a past which has left a number of vestiges for the modern day visitor to see and enjoy. The district of Neapolis, literally meaning the ‘new town’, is one of the most evocative quarters claiming the theatre, the Ear of Dionysius and the Latomia del Paradiso within its boundaries. In a region populated by olive and almond trees, Ragusa Ibla, that is today the aristocratic and oldest part of the city of Ragusa, on a site already inhabited by Siculians, even before the Greeks and Romans, on a promontory stretching out between two steep valleys. This tiny Baroque jewel endowed with an opulent beauty is the result of a single tragic event: the earthquake of 1693, that, despite bringing death and destruction to this part of Sicily, also sparked a huge effort to rebuild.
Itinerary:
Thursday - Departure from Florence by overnight train around 9:30pm. Accommodation in 4–bed wagons.
Friday - Arrive in Taormina in the morning. Visit of the small town, including a taste of the authentic cannoli (typical Sicilian pastry, made with fresh ricotta cheese wrapped into a fried dough). Afternoon transfer to the beach at Giardini Naxos. Free time for lunch. Transfer to Siracusa and hotel check-in. Dinner at a typical Sicilian restaurant.
Saturday - Breakfast at the hotel. Walk to Siracusa archaeological site: Greek theater and Latomie (spectacular limestone quarries). Walk to Ortigia (old town), and visit the food market. Free time for lunch. Guided walking tour of Ortigia: Piazza Archimede, Duomo, Fonte Aretusa, sea shore. Afternoon boat tour. Free time for the rest of the afternoon and dinner.
Sunday - Breakfast at the hotel. Bus transfer to Ragusa Ibla for a visit of this magnificent town, completely rebuilt after the destructive earthquake of 1693. Free time for lunch. Late afternoon transfer to the train station for our overnight train ride back to Florence. Arrival in Florence on Monday morning at around 7.00am.Includes:
- Round trip transportation by a overnight train from Florence

Cinque Terre & The French Riviera
The Cinque Terre is one of the most uncontaminated areas in the Mediterranean Sea. Five miles of rocky coast among two promontories, thousands of kilometers of dry-laid stone walls, five small towns castled up on stone spurs in minuscule creeks. For their history and their position, the Cinque Terre have not suffered a massive expansion. The vineyards, typical of this area, have contributed to create a unique landscape with dry-laid stone walls, winding paths, enchanting beaches between cliffs and clear waters. With the Alps playing bodyguard against inland winds and the sultry Mediterranean warming the breezes, the Cote d'Azur, or French Riviera, is pampered by a nearly tropical climate. This is where the dreamland of azure waters and indigo sky begins, where balustraded white villas edge the blue horizon, evening air is perfumed with jasmine and mimosa, and parasol pines silhouette against sunsets of ripe apricot and gold. As emblematic as the sheet-music cover for a Jazz Age tune, the Cote d'Azur seems to epitomize happiness, a state of being the world pursues with a vengeance. Nice itself is an attraction: the rich blue-green sea, diverse shopping, splendid dining and lovely art-deco facades. Blessed by a sunny, temperate climate, Nice attracts visitors from around the world. Among its many attractions are its beautiful beaches, lovely seaside promenade like the promenade des Anglais. Few spots epitomize Nice -- or, in fact, the joie de vivre of the French Riviera in general -- than the inviting Promenade des Anglais. It is always bustling with humanity. There are tourists relaxing in the royal blue chairs lining the shore. There are locals roller blading, biking or jogging along it. Vendors sell crepes and drinks on it. Cannes is the famous luxurious city, with the yachts along the sea shore and expensive cars on the quay. The beautiful landscapes of its shores with the golden sand beaches, magnificent palaces and streets full of shops. Cannes is famous for the most prestigious hotels where famous Hollywood stars, models and very rich people live.
