Learning beyond the classroom
Internships are an excellent way to extend learning beyond the classroom, explore career options, and build professional networks. Internships offered In Italy allow interns the chance to develop or improve their Italian language skills and gain real world experience in professional environments. All Internships are available for US academic credit. Internship students will receive 3 academic credits which is covered in the program cost.
Placement Options: Placements will be determined by the students language ability and previous experience in their requested field of study. Depending on the students background, there are two possible placements:
Internal Placement: Students will be placed within one of the Community Engagement Member Institutions (CEMI), which are comprised of:
-Ganzo, the Apicius Creative Lab and Hospitality Event Venue
-Fedora, Pastry Shop
-FLY, Fashion Retail Store and Fashion Event Venue
-Corridoio Fiorentino, Digital Imaging and Visual Arts Gallery
-FUA Communications Office/Ingorda, Publishing House
-Squola, Center for Contemporary Italian Studies
-La Palestra, Campus Gym
External Placement: Over the years we have developed a wide ecosystem of internship placements. In order to be eligible for these external placements students must undergo an evaluation by both the Internship department and the external placement supervisor. The availability of these placements may be subject to:
-Seasonality (some placements may be only available in certain sessions)
-Language proficiency requirements (depending on the degree of contact with non English-speaking individuals)
-Further motivational interview run by external supervisor
-Commuting expenses to and back from the placement location of up to one hour duration, at student’s expense
-Weekend work schedule
How to Apply: Students should select the class PS IN IN 450 Internship as part of their Free Elective class schedule. Then will need to submit the following materials:
-A cover/motivational letter explaining the reasons why the student would like an internship and the expected outcome of the internship.
-A detailed resume focused on the specific academic and professional background of the student in the chosen field of interest
-Depending on the field of interest or placement a portfolio may be required
-An Italian language proficiency assessment, which can be assessed through an interview with a certified Italian Language instructor
Upon receipt of the internship materials, students will be contacted by the FUA internship coordinator to arrange a skype interview.

Study Abroad Office Assistant
The Student Life And Development Office Offers Students An Opportunity To Expand Their Knowledge Of The Study Abroad Experience From The Perspective Of The Hosting Country. The SLD Office Is The Main Point Of Reference For All Incoming Students. Responsibilities Range From Assisting With Planning, Organizing And Promoting Activities, Contributing Articles To The Blending Newsletter To General Office Work. Students Are Expected To Collect And Disperse Information To Students And Various Visitors In The Most Effective Way. Students Assist With The Preparation Of All Orientation Materials For Future Sessions. Furthermore They Will Learn To Handle Sensitive Issues Related To Culture Shock And Adjusting To Studying/Living Abroad As Well As Leading Facility Tours For VIP Visitors And Potential Students. Special Projects Are Assigned Depending On The Area Of Interest.
The Library Science Experiential Program Is An Excellent Opportunity For The Student To Understand The Complexity Of The Vital Systems In Place. Working Under The Supervision Of The Librarian, Students Will Perform Circulation Maintenance Routines, Such As Check-In/Check-Out And Overdue Processing, Shelve Books And Compile Usage Statistics. Additional Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To, Administrative And Technical Tasks. Projects Are Assigned As Needed.
Organization and Tourism Management, Accounting and PR
Compiling Final List Of Tour Leaders For Each Field Trip. Assisting With Hotel And Tour Reservations, Assisting With Cash Payments And Giving Receipts. Help Keeping Lists Of Participants Updated With Dobs & Cell Phone. Send A Weekly Mass E-Mail With Update Of Upcoming Field Trips: Description, Photos, Cost, And Method Of Payment. Regularly Send An E-Mail To All Participants Reminding Pre-Departure Information Meetings. Keep Social Network Profiles Updated After Each Field Trip, Update Providers List. Update Bulletin Boards In All School Buildings. Arrange Prospective Calendars, Arrange Pre-Departure Information Sheet, Prepare Trip Evaluation Forms. Make Photocopies Of Pre-Departure Information Sheet And Handouts And/Or Syllabi. Participate As An Assistant In Specific Field Trips To Be Selected In Agreement With The Coordinator.
Wine Service and Beverage Management
ELP In The Wine Industry Aims To Introduce Students To Wine Service And Beverage Management Through Work At Ganzo, Under The Guidance Of Experienced Italian Professionals. Students Will Also Have The Opportunity To Develop An Understanding Of The Activities, Functions And Organization Of A Restaurant And/Or Wineries And To Have A Clearer Grasp Of Wine Service, Presentation Methods, Restaurant Procedures, Wine Knowledge And Pairing In The Hospitality Industry.
Special Event Management
The ELP Core Is To Expose Interns To The Principles Of Event Planning With Emphasis On The Development And Integration Of Operational Strategies. The aforementioned Strategies Will Be Employed In Recreation And Hospitality Management And The Application Of Program Techniques In Event Management. Students Will Learn How To Maximize On Program Ideas And Trends. Topics Will Include: Booking Entertainment, Event Programming And Coordination, Theming And Program Partnerships.
GANZO, The Apicius Creative Lab Offers A 20 Hour A Week Experiential Learning To Highly Motivated Individuals Who Have Experience Or Intentions Of Entering The World Of Hospitality And Food Industry Management. The Chosen Candidate Will Assist The Restaurant Manager With All Aspects Of The Trade And Will Work Closely With The Apicius Food Communication Department, A Major Partner Of GANZO And Currently Its Main Source Of Requests For Communication & Public Relations Services. Tasks Will Include But Will Not Be Limited To: Front Of House Service, Staff Management, Event Management, Contribute To The Maintenance And Contents Of The Food Communications Blog.
Under The Supervision Of The Executive Chef, Who Manages The Operations Of The Kitchen. Line Cooks Are Entry-Level Kitchen Positions That Focus On Learning Technique, Speed And Consistency.
Students Must Be Highly Motivated And Understand Proper Preparation Techniques, Memorize Certain Recipes To Ensure Consistency, Know How To Time Dishes When They Must Be Completed At Once, Know How To Cook In Bulk Without Generating Waste And Know How To Use Commercial Kitchen Equipment Such As Meat Slicers, Salamanders (Broilers) And Steamers And Be Prepared To Perform Other Duties As Directed By Management. Students Must Be Able To Work All Shifts, Weekends, Holidays & Special Events As Needed And Maintain A Consistent, Regular Attendance Record.
Baking and Pastry Assistant
Pastry Chefs Are Artists Who Create Sweet Masterpieces. The Hands-On Experience Is Designed To Prepare Future Pastry Chefs For How To Successfully Prepare Pastries, Baked Goods And A Variety Of Desserts. Understanding The Precision Needed To Bake And Decorate Cakes, Pies, And Other Baked Goods From Scratch. Emphasis Is Placed On Proper Baking Techniques, Knife And Piping Skills, And Mixing Methods. Students Will Learn How To Adjust Recipes To Produce Delicious Products In Large Volumes Versus Intrinsic Specialty Items. Students Will Also Perform A Specific Amount Of Front Of The House Service In Order To Receive A More Comprehensive Training And Develop An Understanding Of The Activities, Functions And Organization Of A Baking And Pastry Shop For Future Entrepreneurial Activities.
Fashion Retail Management Assistant
Retail Management Is The Process Of Selling Through Retail. The Student Will Learn From The Instructor, Observe And Practice The Daily Tasks Of A Retail Manager Making Sure That The Proper Products And Clothes Are Available In The Stores, And Are Price Tagged Correctly. ELP May Include: Liaising With Clients In All Areas Of Sales, Stocking, Replenishing And Cleaning Sales Areas, Customer Service: Offering Advice To Customers And Dealing With Customer Complaints. Due To The High Levels Of Client Interaction, Successful Sales Assistants Will Need A Combination Of Good Negotiation Skills And Diplomacy.
Fashion Photography T.A. Fashion Photography Course
ELP Includes Assisting In Photography Exhibition Set-Up, Work In A Photography Studio, And Take Photos In A Variety Of Settings, I.E. Commercial, Design, And Fashion Shows. As A T.A The Student May Also Be Responsible For Administrative Tasks And Duties.
Publishing Office Assistant
The Communication Office/Ingorda Is A Young Company Seeking To Grow And Gradually Expand To An International Market. The Chosen Students Will Learn From The “Ingorda” Publishing House Coordinator In All Aspects Of The Trade From Regular Accounting Duties Such As Periodic Verification Of Stock, Sales And Deliveries And Creative Tasks In Learning By Assisting With The Production And Layout Of Publications.

The ELP Is Offered To Highly Motivated Individuals Who Have Experience Or Intentions Of Entering The World Of Journalism And Multimedia Communications. The Chosen Students Will Learn By Assisting The School Coordinators And Will Learn By Experiencing Closely With The Academic Institution And Its Various Departments. The Student Will Be Involved In The Creation Of A Multimedia On-Line Journalism Department And The Coordination And Structure Of The News Room. The ELP Will Include Developing An Effective Communication Platform, Creative Contribution To Any Digital Production And Assist With Shoots Out In The Field
Assistant Editor/Proofreader/Contributing Writer For Blending Magazine
Blending (Students' Monthly Newspaper And Semester Magazine). The ELP Is Offered To Highly Motivated Students Who Want To Enter And Practice First Hand The World Of Magazine Editing And Proof Reading. The Student Will Be In Charge, Under The Supervision Of Professionals, Advance Each Article Through Successive Steps Of Checking For Accuracy And Suitability, Readying It For Typesetting And, Finally, Printing As Well As Fact- Checking. Knowledge And Experience In Magazine Production Is Always Extremely Helpful For Higher Editorial Positions
The Student, According To His/Her Professional Background And Personal Skills, Will Gradually Participate In The Design And Production Of Design Materials In Order To Raise And Maintain The Profile Of The Company. The Student Will Learn From The Graphic Designer, Graphic Arts And Possible Marketing Directors And Will Be Assigned To Design And Create Projects And Producing Collateral For The Marketing And Advertising Needs Of Commercial Businesses Such As Brochures, Flyers And Signs. Web Content Editor
The Student Will Be Able To Research And Develop Content For The Communication Office Through The Project. According To The Students Inclinations And Interest He/She Will Be Able To Develop Text And/Or Visual Material For The FUA Magazine, On-Line Publications, Websites, Promotion Of Academic And Extra Academic Events.
The ELP Is Suggested To Highly Motivated Students Who Intend To Observe And Explore The World Of Creative Video Production While Learning By Assisting And Have Successfully Completed A Semester. The Candidate Will Learn By Assisting The Professor And Students According To The Professor's Guidance.
The Student Will Be Responsible For Directing The Students In The Completion Of The Projects Assigned In Class. The ELP Will Include Maintaining Equipment, Logging Important Information, Dealing With Students Issues And Reporting To The Professor.
Italian Language T.A.
The Italian Language Experiential Learning Is The Most Flexible ELP Offered. It Was Developed To Allow Students The Opportunity To Utilize Their Language Skills In A Variety Of Environments. Interacting On A Professional Level In Italian Will Build And Improve The Students Written And Verbal Skills. Students Also Gain An Appreciation For The Culture And International Business Perspective. The Program Can Be Designed To Fit The Individual’s Interests And Educational Goals. Interns Duties Will Vary According To The Placement.
Students Will Learn From The Organization And Operation Of FUA's Internal Sport Facility. The Student Will Learn By Assisting With The Daily Operations Of The Gym: Checking Access Records, Handling Of Machines Misuse And Maintenance Requests. The Student Will Implement Information And Assistance For All Clients. In Addition The Student Will Actively Participate In The Planning And Organization Of The Internal Courses, Interview Possible Instructor Candidates, Review CV’s, Create And Finalize Course Schedules. The Student Will Also Cooperate On A Final Evaluation Material For The Possible Trainers As Well As With The Graphic Department For The Creation Of Final Certificates. Throughout The Program The Student Will Also Research Relevant External Sport Related Activities Taking Place In The City Of Florence Which Will Be Enhancing The Students’ Connection With The Hosting Culture And Environment.
