Learning beyond the classroom

Internships are an excellent way to extend learning beyond the classroom, explore career options, and build professional networks. Internships offered In Italy allow interns the chance to develop or improve their Italian language skills and gain real world experience in professional environments. All Internships are available for US academic credit. Internship students will receive 3 academic credits which is covered in the program cost.

Placement Options: Placements will be determined by the students language ability and previous experience in their requested field of study. Depending on the students background, there are two possible placements:

Internal Placement: Students will be placed within one of the Community Engagement Member Institutions (CEMI), which are comprised of:

-Ganzo, the Apicius Creative Lab and Hospitality Event Venue
-Fedora, Pastry Shop
-FLY, Fashion Retail Store and Fashion Event Venue
-Corridoio Fiorentino, Digital Imaging and Visual Arts Gallery
-FUA Communications Office/Ingorda, Publishing House
-Squola, Center for Contemporary Italian Studies
-La Palestra, Campus Gym

External Placement: Over the years we have developed a wide ecosystem of internship placements. In order to be eligible for these external placements students must undergo an evaluation by both the Internship department and the external placement supervisor. The availability of these placements may be subject to:

-Seasonality (some placements may be only available in certain sessions)
-Language proficiency requirements (depending on the degree of contact with non English-speaking individuals)
-Further motivational interview run by external supervisor
-Commuting expenses to and back from the placement location of up to one hour duration, at student’s expense
-Weekend work schedule
-Portfolio evaluation

How to Apply: Students should select the class PS IN IN 450 Internship as part of their Free Elective class schedule. Then will need to submit the following materials:
-A cover/motivational letter explaining the reasons why the student would like an internship and the expected outcome of the internship.
-A detailed resume focused on the specific academic and professional background of the student in the chosen field of interest
-Depending on the field of interest or placement a portfolio may be required
-An Italian language proficiency assessment, which can be assessed through an interview with a certified Italian Language instructor

Upon receipt of the internship materials, students will be contacted by the FUA internship coordinator to arrange a skype interview.

    The Student Life And Development Office Offers Students An Opportunity To Expand Their Knowledge Of The Study Abroad Experience From The Perspective Of The Hosting Country. The SLD Office Is The Main Point Of Reference For All Incoming Students. Responsibilities Range From Assisting With Planning, Organizing And Promoting Activities, Contributing Articles To The Blending Newsletter To General Office Work. Students Are Expected To Collect And Disperse Information To Students And Various Visitors In The Most Effective Way. Students Assist With The Preparation Of All Orientation Materials For Future Sessions. Furthermore They Will Learn To Handle Sensitive Issues Related To Culture Shock And Adjusting To Studying/Living Abroad As Well As Leading Facility Tours For VIP Visitors And Potential Students. Special Projects Are Assigned Depending On The Area Of Interest.

    The Library Science Experiential Program Is An Excellent Opportunity For The Student To Understand The Complexity Of The Vital Systems In Place. Working Under The Supervision Of The Librarian, Students Will Perform Circulation Maintenance Routines, Such As Check-In/Check-Out And Overdue Processing, Shelve Books And Compile Usage Statistics. Additional Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To, Administrative And Technical Tasks. Projects Are Assigned As Needed.

Update Bulletin Boards In All School Buildings. Arrange Prospective Calendars, Arrange Pre-Departure Information Sheet, Prepare Trip Evaluation Forms. Make Photocopies Of Pre-Departure Information Sheet And Handouts And/Or Syllabi. Participate As An Assistant In Specific Field Trips To Be Selected In Agreement With The Coordinator.

    ELP In The Wine Industry Aims To Introduce Students To Wine Service And Beverage Management Through Work At Ganzo, Under The Guidance Of Experienced Italian Professionals.     GANZO, The Apicius Creative Lab Offers A 20 Hour A Week Experiential Learning To Highly Motivated Individuals Who Have Experience Or Intentions Of Entering The World Of Hospitality And Food Industry Management. The Chosen Candidate Will Assist The Restaurant Manager With All Aspects Of The Trade And Will Work Closely With The Apicius Food Communication Department, A Major Partner Of GANZO And Currently Its Main Source Of Requests For Communication & Public Relations Services.
