Semester Subject Intensive Programs (SIPs)
Study abroad students enrolled in an SIP program are fully integrated into the degree courses and study alongside UK degree seeking students. Since the study of art and design is different in Europe, students will find they are working more independently than at their home schools.  In addition, students are encouraged to take a hands-on, project oriented approach to learning. Professors offer guidance and support to visiting students in order to help them fit seamlessly into their program of choice. Students will earn 15 US credits per semester. Each subject-specific semester program at UAL is designed with the goal of maximizing the student experience; both in terms of providing a framework for academic inquiry, as well as offering each student the opportunity to work under the mentorship of leading industry professionals. Upon acceptance, students will be appropriately placed in either Year 1 or Year 2 of the program, depending on the student’s portfolio.

Semester Free Elective Programs
In addition to the semester programs described above, UAL also offers five free elective programs geared specifically towards study abroad students.  Students will earn up to 16 credits per program. Each program consists of a set curriculum with the chance to choose from several elective courses.

Graphic Design | CSM

Graphic Design is hardly adequate to describe the breadth of this program. The curriculum embraces typography, advertising, photography, moving image, drawing, printmaking, illustration and interactive design. Students are encouraged to experiment creatively and critically. The philosophy of the Graphic Design course at Central Saint Martins is that students define their goals, experiment with ideas and challenge current practices to produce work that is outside commercial constraints. The program helps to develop individual students’ creative potential through improvisation, speculation and experimentation. Students may specialize (for example in typography) or be pluralists (for example in multi-media design). The program supports open attitudes to graphic design, communication design and design strategies; it encourages multi-disciplinary, individual and team working.

Students are placed into  year 2 of the program. Below you will find the set curriculum for each term.

Illustration and Visual Media | LCC

This new program capitalizes on the heritage of graphic design education at LCC by acknowledging traditional values and specialist skills while recognizing the changing and dynamic nature of design and illustration. The program seeks to challenge existing preconceptions and definitions of Illustration and encourages students to view themselves as thinkers as well as image makers. Taught by a team of practicing artists, designers, researchers and academics, all the tutors on the program are actively involved in scholarly investigation, graphic design and art related professional practice. The program fosters an understanding of contemporary creative practice, critical debate and scholarly responsibility. The program offers you the intellectual and creative space to examine existing definitions of illustration whilst exploring future directions. This enables students to work in a broad range of media, processes and techniques. Nothing is ‘off limits’. Students are supported in negotiating individual routes of study in response to a series of set, live and self-initiated briefs. Emphasis is placed on developing a range of practical, conceptual, research and decision-making skills that are transferrable from the academic environment to the world of creative practice beyond university.
