Semester Subject Intensive Programs (SIPs)
Study abroad students enrolled in an SIP program are fully integrated into the degree courses and study alongside UK degree seeking students. Since the study of art and design is different in Europe, students will find they are working more independently than at their home schools.  In addition, students are encouraged to take a hands-on, project oriented approach to learning. Professors offer guidance and support to visiting students in order to help them fit seamlessly into their program of choice. Students will earn 15 US credits per semester. Each subject-specific semester program at UAL is designed with the goal of maximizing the student experience; both in terms of providing a framework for academic inquiry, as well as offering each student the opportunity to work under the mentorship of leading industry professionals. Upon acceptance, students will be appropriately placed in either Year 1 or Year 2 of the program, depending on the student’s portfolio.

Semester Free Elective Programs
In addition to the semester programs described above, UAL also offers five free elective programs geared specifically towards study abroad students.  Students will earn up to 16 credits per program. Each program consists of a set curriculum with the chance to choose from several elective courses.

Architecture: Spaces & Objects explores design for the human environment through the buildings and spaces that we inhabit, and the objects that we employ within those spaces. Through a consideration of the interaction between built form and material culture we develop a greater understanding of the role that architects and designers can play in the broader contexts of contemporary society. The interrelation of the architecture, spaces and objects forms our human environment. As we live in an increasingly connected world, as designers we must develop the ability to understand and integrate different agendas in order to offer design solutions that are responsive to local as well as global influences. The methods and materials that we use to construct and maintain our built environment become critical in reflecting and questioning the impact that we have upon the natural environment.

Working with existing buildings and spaces and exploring different possibilities for habitation and use, the course focuses on designing complex architectural spaces, discreet multi-media installations and sensory environments. Chelsea’s vibrant art college context is vital in providing opportunities to uncover overlapping concerns between the different disciplines being taught within the College. A wide-ranging theory program encourages individual enquiry and debate and deepens understanding of design issues while professional practice is developed through participation in external competitions, live projects and a lively evening lecture program. The program has recently developed a new suite of digital facilities including a custom designed file sharing service, wireless internet access across studios, computer hardware and software, laser cutting machinery and a Black Box Media Space which enables the display of audio-visual work and drawings in a digital gallery space.
