The MA in Car Design is offered during the following term/s:
September 2012 – August 2013
The Master in Car Design lasts 12 months.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Master in Car Design is based on the principle of “learning by designing”. In order to design it is not important what the theory describes as possible: the designer is interested in the potentials, those possibilities the theory does not eliminate. What is interesting is the method with which to direct the existing know-how towards an innovation vision.

This MA follows the approach of “learning by designing”, where participants learn by a direct, active involvement in several design experiences. The program is divided into 4 sections: induction (lectures, testimonials, and field visits, Workshops, Focus and Final Master Thesis.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVE

This MA program aims at strengthening participants’ design competences together with the development of their professional profile. At the end of the program, students will be ready to work as car designers, within the framework of a company or a design studio, and they will be able to effectively interact with the marketing, production and finance functions.

Workshops: Workshops are the backbone of Domus Academy’s unique learning approach. During workshops, from May to December, students work on different areas of project in collaboration with car designers and partner automotive companies. Every workshop includes lectures (cultural, methodological and technical), meeting with automotive sector experts, and a design project, developed with the supervision of experienced designers. Participants will receive a project brief, they will work under the guidance of a project leader and with the assistance of a tutor, individually or in a small design team. At the end of the workshops, a presentation of the projects’ results will be held, in some cases to a mixed team of faculty members and external experts.

Master Thesis: In the last months of the program, participants will work on a project that gathers all the competences developed during their studies, starting from a global vision and getting to the design of a detail. Participants to the Master in Car Design will be asked to choose a design theme to be developed, to give a sense to their project and to carry it out keeping an high level of research in all the steps of the design process. Project results will be prepared at an actual professional level, will be shown during the thesis dissertation and will enrich the student’s personal portfolio.
