As part time locals, we have developed our favorite places in Florence for all sorts of life activities. From good eats to great shopping, we know exactly where to go to satisfy a need or want.

Osteria all’ Antico Vinaio: It is here that you can find a well made, large sandwich for 5 euros and are guaranteed to walk away a happy camper. Of course, if you have a preference on what you eat, I suggest that you thoroughly look over the menu; however, if you are an up for anything guy or gal then ask them to make you their favorite or simply, something yummy. They succeed every time in my experience

Gelateria Della Passera: If you want good gelato without feeling like you are lining your entire body with sugars and fats…this is your place. It is unique, delicious flavors that are light and genuine in flavor. For 2 euro, you can be in a two scoop gelato bliss.

San Lorenzo Market: When in Italy you should experience shopping in the central market and taste these quality products. If you are like my roommate and me, you will make this your primary source for produce. When you are feeling adventurous, I suggest buying different cheeses, salami, pastas, and truffle oil from here as well. If you are curious about unusual flavors, give persimmons and cherimoyas a good try. I love the market because the food is fresh and it is sold at a good price. Then there is also fun in finding vendors that you frequent and start to build a relationship with.

Eataly: This grocery store reminds me of stores from home – Trader Joes or Whole Foods. It does tend to be higher in price than a Conad, but it offers specialized foods. I have become addicted to the pesto, raisin bread, and pistacchio cream from here. If you like tea at all, Eataly offers a good selection of splendid teas.

Rivoire: This shop is a cafe and pastry shop, which also houses the BEST hot chocolate in Florence. It is made from dark chocolate and has a thick consistency that resembles pure melted chocolate. It is absolutely death by chocolate, suited only for those with the right palette and appreciation for dark chocolate.

Vestri: A small chocolate shop to meet all of your one of a kind chocolate desires. Do you crave basil and chocolate or passion fruit and chocolate? This is your place to go! There is no telling what this shop will pair chocolate with next, but it’s a guarantee that it will satisfy your tastebuds and will be adopted into your routine while abroad. Also, you can always grab a scoop of gelato if you are not in the mood for chocolate. Mm mmm good!

Piazzale Michelangelo: Not only does making the trek to this piazza constitute as a great workout, but it also makes for the most spectacular view of the city. During the day, at sunset, or with a nighttime cityscape, it is well worth the steep incline. Not to mention, if you are lucky you will stumble upon a gelato festival being held here.

Ponte alla Carraia: This bridge is right next to my apartment and makes for a great place to observe the tourists, to ponder about one’s future, and to breath in the fresh air while looking at the gorgeous city that is your home for now.

Museo Stibbert: The museum is off the beaten path a bit, but it is filled with extraordinary odds and ends. From gorgeous chandeliers to intricate armor, all of it is fun to look at. If you have the opportunity, walk through the garden outside of the museum because there is plenty of beauty to be found there as well. You may even find a place for a picnic!

Any and all vintage shops: Vintage shops are in abundance in Florence; often found on side streets. They are filled with all sorts of treasures, from every time period, with the potential of finding designer labels and a piece that is destined to be yours. My best suggestion is that you seek out your own favorites, mine will likely be different from yours due to differences in style.
