SUMMER I: INSTITUTE FOR CREATIVE WRITING AND LITERARY TRANSLATION

Since it’s founding in 2009, the Institute for Creative Writing and Literary Translation has quickly become a thriving community of and for writers in Rome. The Institute’s reading series has featured such luminaries as Mark Strand, Simon Mawer, Marianne Boruch, Peter Campion, Eliza Griswold, Moira Egan, Richard Kenney, Brad Leithauser, Robert Polito, Mary Jo Salter, Edmund White, Ingrid de Kok, Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi, and Dacia Maraini. With workshops in the major genres (fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction) and literary translation offered in the fall, spring, and summer terms, the Institute is the place for creative writing students to spend serious time on their writing as they get to know the Eternal City.

This summer, writing students who take part in this program will have the opportunity to work with two of America’s leading literary figures. The 2012 Summer Institute for Creative Writing and Literary Translation at John Cabot University is proud to welcome poet Billy Collins and novelist Joyce Carol Oates as Writers in Residence. Collins and Oates will take part in the activities of the Summer Institute and will visit the creative writing workshops to discuss their work with students. In addition, throughout the summer they will hold public readings of their work and will conduct open lectures to discuss the craft of writing.

SAI students wishing to participate should apply for the “Summer I” term at John Cabot University and enroll in courses specified as being part of the Institute.

Please note: the application deadline has passed, but SAI is still accepting applications for this term.  Courses will fill up, however, so students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
