Semester students at LCC follow a set curriculum and are fully integrated into the degree courses, studying alongside degree seeking students. Students select a program area from communications, graphic design, spatial design, film, photography and sound subjects, and are placed in year 1 or 2 based on experience. Students complete 12 credits of pre-determined full time coursework in that area of study. Students can also choose to add a 3 credit Art History or Creative Industries course for a total of 15 credits.

Advertising
London College of Communication is one of the world’s leading institutions in producing award-winning, new talent into the advertising and communications industries. Advertising will prepare you as a multi-faceted communicator, developing your own unique creative voice and forward-facing approach. A regular gatherer of awards, projects from the course have won Gold at D&AD, London; Gold at Young Lions, Cannes; Silver at Eurobest, Sweden and Silver at The One Show New York and regularly short list in the monthly international ad competition, Young Glory.

Learn current advertising practices whilst also questioning latest thinking and challenging your preconceptions, so that you not only become a successful innovator today but also tomorrow. The course is structured to emulate an advertising agency where you will practice your craft and come to appreciate the conceptual, theoretical and practical aspects of advertising through to creative output and client presentation.

There will be a set programme of academic and live project briefs set by creative directors and there will be opportunities to raise your profile through student competitions and self-initiated projects. In doing this, you will draw on taught techniques for ideas-generation, research, consumer planning and story-boarding as well as pitching your idea for funding, and creatively realising your work to achieve strategic and brand goals.

Overall, you will leave the course having developed a very personal and professional approach to advertising, whereby you’ll be ready to work alone or as part of a collaborative project, creating your own future as a leader in this highly creative arena.

Journalism
Get inside the story with Journalism at LCC. Known for being as close to on-the-job learning as it gets, you’ll gain the skills and knowledge in print, online and broadcast journalism. Work on Artefact, the College magazine, and put your skills straight into practice in our industry-standard, multimedia newsroom.

Journalism at London College of Communication is designed to equip students to succeed as professional journalists in the demanding and rapidly-evolving world of journalism. You will study the core journalism practices, including: researching, story-finding, newsgathering, interviewing, evaluating, story-telling and investigating as well as acquire the technical skills that will support your journalism: video, editing, audio, content management and web design. You’ll also have the opportunity to explore different genres of journalism from music, entertainment and travel, to politics, investigation and life-style.

There is a strong theoretical element to the course, placing journalism in its political, social, historical and global contexts, and analysing the key ethical issues faced by journalists. For example, you will consider how gender is represented in the newspapers; the growth of immersive, investigative journalism; and how crowd-funding is impacting media ownership.

We will take your journalism out of the classroom with field trips, conferences and events. In the second year, you will go on a work placement and also get the chance to work collaboratively with students from other courses and creative disciplines in the College. Students have a successful track record in securing work placements with media businesses such as The Independent, Shortlist Magazine, NME, FourFourTwo, Metro, Attitude, Woman’s Health, The Times, ID and Private Eye.

Magazine Journalism and Publishing
Magazine Journalism and Publishing students go on to enjoy brilliant careers in editorial, production, marketing, and sales positions across the world of media publishing. This wide-ranging course explores media studies, journalism, law, production and business management, and will give you the creative, analytical and transferable skills necessary to succeed in this increasingly dynamic, evolving media world.

Magazine Journalism and Publishing is a unique course that combines the practical and technical skills of journalism, editing and production with a contextual understanding of the business of publishing within the creative industries. The course has been developed in response to the huge change in media and magazine consumption, where the world of publishing exists inside and outside of the media industry, from customer publishing to in-house communications. There is also a vibrant independent magazine scene whose epicenter is London, part of a renaissance for the printed page. Today more magazines are published than ever, and across many platforms.

There are two main strands to the course Editoral and Publishing.

The first strand, Editorial, is practice based and focuses on the creation of magazine content and the curation of its narratives. You will learn the editorial and production skills necessary to plan, commission and produce both print and digital magazines. You will do this by working on College publications and by having the opportunity to generate your own original publishing projects.

In the second strand, Publishing, you will analyse markets and readerships, and also develop strong creative media management and entrepreneurial skills that are directed to launching magazines or working collaboratively to create a branded media project.

You’ll develop good research, communication and analytical skills that are important to the modern media environment and also have the opportunity to undertake an industry placement to contextualise this learning. The two strands combine to offer a broad approach to the study of journalism and publishing that will enable you to develop a toolkit of transferable skills crucial for practitioners working in the new multi-platform environment.

Media Communications
Start the debate. With the Media Communications you’ll focus on the social and cultural impact of digital media forms, examining the technologies, practices and policies that drive modern media communications. Manipulating images, writing in different styles, editing, working with layout software and pitching and presenting – we cover all these areas so you have applied skills you can take straight into industry.

London College of Communication’s Media Communications will teach you how to create, manage and challenge information on a number of creative and conceptual levels to take on a variety of roles within this broad-ranging field of work. This degree course responds to the continuing transformation of media communications. Converging media platforms have heralded the production of new forms of content, targeted at both general and niche audiences – whose attention is now a prime commodity.

You can expect to gain an in-depth understanding of current theories of the media with an emphasis on the social and cultural impact of digital media forms, e.g. social and interactive media. The proliferation of new media platforms, such as open source software and social network sites, creates new opportunities for participation and changes dramatically the way users communicate and exchange information. This program will encourage students to develop a critical understanding of these communication technologies through content production and by stimulating debate.

Applied skills such as image manipulation, editing and working with layout software will be taught, so that you’re able to produce audio-visual texts for publication on the web. And you’ll become familiar with camera and audio recording equipment to create and store original material. Different styles of writing are also practised so that you will be proficient in drafting accompanying text, whatever the context. You will leave the course able to select the best platform to disseminate content to intended audiences and become familiar with project planning, budgeting and financial management including the production of timelines. Finally, this course will train you to successfully pitch and present your ideas.

On a theoretical level, the Media Communications will engage you in the latest debates concerning the cultural, social and economic issues that shape the way meaning is produced and circulated, and the many issues that intersect within this academic investigation.

Public Relations
Prepare for a successful career in the growing and dynamic Public Relations (PR) industry. Discover how brands communicate ideas, products and services to diverse audiences, and how reputations are formed and maintained in a digital environment. You’ll explore PR as a force in the 21st century, its relationship to marketing and advertising, and learn key skills for building relationships in media relations, social media, event management, political communication. Public Relations at LCC will prepare you for a dynamic, challenging and rewarding career.

This course focuses exclusively on Public Relations and provides you with a comprehensive understanding of how it fits within the wider communications mix. You’ll learn about the essential management of reputation which is at the heart of all successful organisations and how to develop an awareness of the media and communication channels available to you in delivering public relations campaigns. Furthermore, you will be taught how to make the most of your creative ideas in support of organisational goals.

Your studies will equip you with the skills required for communicating and promoting concepts, products and services to a wide range of audiences, with the literacy and knowledge of social and political affairs required to assist your creative response to the news agenda and more. Practice in these areas is solidly underpinned by teaching across social, media and cultural theory so that you’ll be able to engage and contribute to the current debates and issues affecting the industry and its many overlapping disciplines such as sponsorship, marketing and advertising in the new digital environment.

Sports Journalism
From interviewing athletes to covering live sports events and connecting with current debates, this practice-based course will give you the skills you need to work within sports journalism in the context of print, broadcasting and web. Discover this specialist but prolific discipline alongside the new skills of digital production, multimedia and social networking.

Sports Journalism will equip you with the practical ability and theoretical knowledge to thrive in the competitive world of modern journalism. Discover the fundamental skills of sports journalism in the context of print, broadcasting and digital on this practice-based course.

The course is distinctive in its unique mix of practice and theory, through which you will develop both multi-media professional skills and the analytical ability that employers demand in today’s fast changing media industry. As a budding sports journalist, you’ll be equipped with the skills needed to flourish in a multi-media environment. You will also learn about the social, cultural, political and economic importance of sport so that your journalism connects with contemporary debates.

You can expect to learn how to cover real sports events, interview athletes and profile sports stars and generate original investigations alongside the new skills of digital production. A thorough grounding in the skills needed to produce sports content for all media platforms is provided, which covers newspapers, magazines, broadcasting and online. Specific areas of study will include research and interview techniques, writing for different audiences, digital production, layout skills and the use of social media. You’ll also develop an understanding of media law and ethics – essential knowledge during your time as a student journalist and beyond.

You’ll put these skills into practice in a series of real journalism assignments and work in the College’s fully equipped multi-media newsroom, collaborating with journalism and photojournalism students to provide sports-related content for LCC’s monthly magazine and website Artefact.

Film and Television
Film and Television is aimed at students with a passion for cinema, television and moving image art forms which they want to develop through filmmaking and critical thinking about film. The course gives you the opportunity to gain a grounding in a wide range of production methods and styles: from narrative fiction to fine art films and installations, and from documentaries to multi-camera television drama.

You will be able to develop your own unique themes, style, and portfolio as a filmmaker by collaborating on at least one film every term and experimenting in these different production styles. We encourage students to experiment with a range of technologies for recording, editing and projecting film throughout the three years. We offer networked Final Cut Pro HD editing and Protools/Logic sound systems and a high quality preview projection theatre. Students participate in a program of engaging film theory seminars with film screenings. The focus of these seminars is on the ideas and philosophies that have informed both filmmakers and film critics of the past, and on new discourses for film criticism and practice in the future.

Film Practice
Geared towards industry and designed to develop your creative, commercial and practical skills,  Film Practice will prepare you for a range of technical roles within film production. Workshops in the areas of sound, camerawork, lighting, directing and assistant directing, producing, acting, editing, screenwriting, and production design will develop and expand your skills and potential to operate creatively and within a variety of technical roles.

The backdrop to this course is the College’s state-of-the-art media facilities that boast a multi-camera studio and Final Cut Pro editing suites. Students also benefit from LCC’s excellent location which has easy access to the British Film Institute, Tate Modern and The Cinema Museum. The College is also home to the Stanley Kubrick Archive from where films are screened for seminars and guest lectures.

You’ll be thrown into a hands-on learning experience in which you’ll explore the entire film production process from development to post production. This rigorous and focused curriculum reflects the strategies, disciplines and realities of contemporary professional digital film production, and takes place in a nurturing and encouraging environment.

You’ll also benefit from seminars with agents, development executives and exhibitors, who have been generous in offering to students, invaluable opportunities to build professional networks and to receive career advice. In addition, you’ll develop key transferable skills such as entrepreneurship, project management and teamwork to support you in forging a successful career path.

Live Events and Television
Capture the moment. With this industry aligned course you’ll learn to produce, direct and manage productions to create and transform environments for live events and television. You’ll also develop specialist skills and a detailed understanding of the kinds of production work involved in this exciting industry.

Explore and obtain the knowledge, skills needed to work in the live events and television production industries. Live Events and Television integrates creative, technical, managerial, logistical research and practice required for the development of confident and competent production people.

You will learn to produce, direct and manage productions and create and transform environments for live events and television. You will also gain a detailed understanding of the economics of staging events.

Its core is creative direction with design implementation skills across a broad range of live and recorded platforms, including corporate, festivals, promotional, charitable, educational, theatrical, entertainment events and television.

Students can expect to become confident and competent in a range of production skills that chart the entire production process. This includes brief and script analysis, producing and creative direction, lighting and sound, sponsorship and income generation. You will put these to practice through collaborative projects that allow you to try out multiple roles and experience industry style briefs and challenges within a supportive environment. This is crucial to your career development, enabling you to find the right role that suits your skills and interest.

Tutors teach the theoretical aspects of this discipline in a way that helps you to make direct connections with its practice. Topics will cover visual cultural influences, historical moments and socio-cultural context. You will also be introduced to the industry’s progressive changes, e.g. ecological approaches to production and new methods. In addition, regular industry visits and guests will help integrate you with the real working world.

In the second year, you will be encouraged to sharpen your skills and knowledge through a work placement or undertake a production project. This provides an invaluable opportunity to widen your professional networks and increase your opportunity for employment. Previous industry partners include: London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), Clarion Productions, Blackout Ltd, Delta Sound, Set Square Scenery, National Theatre Costume and Props Store, Lesley Goring Fashion Productions, MTV, and Endemol.

Photography
Photography at LCC is a rigorous and robust programme which takes a conceptual approach to the study of photography. This involves researching and studying photography theoretically, as well as practically, and it’s this combination which enables students to produce a conceptually strong practice and increasingly find their own voice within it.

Photography encourages you to generate visual ideas and teaches you the techniques to put them into practice. In a developing image market, transferable skills such as these are recognised as essential career tools for photographers.

The course is delivered by a team of practising photographers, artists, curators and writers, supplemented by visiting tutors and speakers from the photography, arts and media industries. Graduates have been successful as photographers or artists, particularly in cross-over areas of fine art, documentary, fashion, editorial and advertising photography. The course enables you to develop independent photographic practice. It encourages an approach to photography, which encompasses fine art, documentary and commercial practice.

Our contextual studies programme is also a key element of the course. Developed especially for photography students, it introduces you to a wide range of cutting-edge and historical photographic practices. Your development as a professional photographer will also be supported through lectures, seminars, project briefings and technical workshops designed to enhance your skills, in addition to regular talks from visiting speakers.

You will have an opportunity to visit London-based production facilities such as photographic studios, magazine and newspaper publishing houses and processing facilities. London’s art centres, galleries and museums provide wonderful stimuli for project work.

Photojournalism & Documentary Photography
News photography, reportage, social issues: these are just a few of the areas you’ll focus on as part of this exciting and innovative course. The emphasis is on work-related learning so you’ll be covering real, live news events, photographing newsworthy people, and producing LCC’s newspaper in collaboration with journalism students, and through external work placements.

This course allows you to follow a lively, cutting-edge curriculum rooted in the practice of photojournalism and documentary photography. It offers you the knowledge and skills to become a professional photojournalist. You will cover real news events; photographing politicians, celebrities and other newsworthy people, while standing side-by-side with the professionals.

An important and challenging part of the programme is work-related learning centred on outside work attachments and work for the College’s own monthly magazine and website Artefact. Running alongside the practical and career-focused nature of this degree course are units in the history of journalism and photojournalism, and the history of 20th century intellectual, political, and cultural thought and movements.

Sound Arts and Design
Sound Arts and Design centres around the creative use of sound, both as an independent and supportive medium. Led by internationally recognised sound artists, composers and writers, you’ll gain technical, creative and theoretical knowledge in the sound arts and develop specialist skills as you build a portfolio of sound-related projects.

Sound Arts and Design covers the diverse ways in which sound has become an essential part of today’s media, arts and design industry. Students are taught how to apply a range of technical and creative skills across new and emerging technologies to produce original pieces of sound for a variety of media and contexts. The course considers an extremely broad area of output, including sound for film, internet and animation, electroacoustic music composition, sound art and multi-channel installation as well as web-based pieces, musical concert works and soundscapes.

This course will take you on an exploration of sound art and design as an emerging culture to be found across many arts and media forms, in which your own analysis and evaluation will be central. You will mature and expand your potential as a creative practitioner gaining confidence in studio mixing and mastering, field recording and phonography, digital audio and MIDI sequencing, radiophonic work, synthesis, digital improvisation, interactive programming and experimental music.

The course is delivered within specialist industry standard audio facilities including a sound-treated performance laboratory, a composition suite, a video postproduction suite and numerous high level audio workstations. Your increasing technical, creative and theoretical knowledge will support you in the creative development of a reflective portfolio. You will produce this work within a context of the history, practices and concerns of the sonic arts and of the major theoretical, philosophical and aesthetic issues in the media arts.

Animation
Study a subject where you can create, explore and play. With new technologies changing how we make, understand and experience animation, there’s never been a better time to begin. Animation gives you the chance to test boundaries and look at animation in many forms and in many ways.

In a rapidly changing media environment, new technologies are changing how animation is created, experienced and understood. It is a discipline that has widely diversified and is now found everywhere. Animation is creative, exploratory and playful. Students of Animation will become versatile and innovative and they will understand how traditional skills underpin new digital technologies and platforms, and where and how those skills can be applied and exploited. They will also learn how to develop different ways of working, to collaborate, and test ideas.

This course will expose you to a broad and varied experience of animation work. You will negotiate a journey that begins with animation’s core principles to creating work using sophisticated computer techniques and developing a range of techniques and disciplines including: drawing, model making, photography, filmmaking and design. You will create and develop a portfolio of work that demonstrates your creative skills and abilities, technical knowledge, and the communication and presentation skills that are necessary to succeed and flourish in a dynamic and complex media world. As creative and critical thinkers, you will be encouraged to push boundaries: to explore and experience animation in new combinations and contexts.

Based in the college’s rich studio environment you will work on practical projects where you will understand the need to collaborate, analyse and communicate your ideas and intentions. The team-working model that is at the core of the degree program will give you an understanding of the roles and functions encountered in animation production. Informed by industry and modelled on elements of industry practice these projects aim to prepare you for employment.

You will have the opportunity to develop your communication and presentation skills. Work is discussed in group crit sessions, project presentations and industry pitches.

Design for Art Direction
Design for Art Direction will not only help you learn the skills associated with being a practice-based designer, but also develop your creative vision and the ability to direct other practitioners in realising that vision in whatever media and outcome are relevant to the solution. Design for Art Direction is a unique course that explores the practical, conceptual and managerial skills relating to design and art direction. This course is about practice but it also covers leadership and the management of processes.

Throughout the course you will gain expertise in the practical aspects of graphic design related to the communication of concepts. Additionally, the course will focus on the role of the Art Director/Creative Director in developing and realising ideas through leadership, management and commissioning of individuals and teams of designers, photographers, filmmakers, advertisers, illustrators or other media specialists in the creative industries.

The College is home to excellent and extensive resources from analogue to digital, all of which help you gain a wide range of skills relevant to the subject and profession.   • This exciting new course builds on the College’s considerable expertise in the area of design and media, which form essential aspects of art direction. You will be introduced to a broad range of design skills and media which will enable you to confidently communicate your concepts and ideas to specialist practitioners.

Game Design
Build. Test. Play. Games Design gives you the opportunity to take the software tools of games design and create new gaming experiences. From storyboarded concepts to playable prototypes to user testing and evaluation, you’ll design the code as well as the visual feedback systems so you’re ready to join the industry and develop new games from scratch.

Games Design will teach you how to take the software tools of games design and create new gaming experiences from concept to finished game. Explore skills sought by industry such as coding and programming, enabling you to translate an idea into playable prototypes and use software to achieve your design goals and creative direction. The focus of the course looks at the challenge presented by the game, as defined by the rules of play. You will design and build dynamic systems, which develops player experience as mental processing, physical input and emotional response.

Working from original concepts you will develop ideas into playable games and test them to evaluate their experience of play. You’ll not only design the visual feedback, but also the player interaction with the game mechanics. This concept-to-game approach is supported by the growing theoretical area of games studies.

Students can expect to be taught in a way that encourages you to regularly generate new concepts and to remain innovative in your practice. You’ll learn the design and development skills necessary to put you at the forefront of this growing profession and be sought after by leading design and software companies worldwide.

Key topics covered include: interactive design, the psychology of games, designing the experience of play, computer programming and 3D modeling. You’ll learn how to write game design documents starting from the initial concept, before mastering the various stages of development.

Put your newly acquired skills into practice as you continually build playable games throughout the course. During this process, you’ll demonstrate storyboarding and visualisation techniques to communicate ideas with linear or non-linear content. You will also be expected to analyse gaming trends and identify unique selling points to build into the game’s hooks and features and create your own animated content, adding functionality with scripting before testing for performance and usability.

Graphic Branding and Identity
Graphic branding and identity are at the centre of every element of communication. They are fundamental to all societies whether to define them culturally, socially or to provide commercial focus. This is a dynamic subject with distinct professional opportunities and Graphic Branding and Identity will help you develop your individual approach, through practice, to support your future career ambitions.

Understand how identity and branding behaviors define us as individuals and groups, as well as commercially and corporately, and how it can reinforce identity.

Graphic Branding and Identity is a practical course which allows you to explore diverse and creative approaches to branding and identity from concept through to realisation.

You will gain valuable insights into all aspects of the subject from its historical, social, cultural and commercial contexts through design practice relating to brand and identity expression. In addition, have access to the College’s extensive range of resources from printmaking and letterpress to moving image and digital media. The course is designed to produce strategic thinkers and creative communicators who will become significant professional practitioners within this expansive industry. The following features give the course a distinctive identity and help to ensure that we are offering a unique, exclusive and exciting experience for you, including:

  • Practical projects and technical workshops are designed to enable you to choose and develop the right message, to the right audience, at the right time using the right media.
  • The course will allow you to place graphic branding in the context of graphic design, branded spaces and interiors, packaging, moving image, advertising and narrative storytelling and is designed to encourage innovation and initiative.
  • Your practice will be supported and informed by theory associated with the subject which places it within an historical, cultural and social context.
  • Collaboration – This combination of practical and theoretical exploration and understanding is further supported by live projects and collaborative involvement with industry.
  • Strategy and brand planning – The course will introduce you to strategic and brand planning combined with design principles associated with a broad range of media while the second year will consolidate and expand on design and brand expression while encouraging individual and collaborative working and engagement with theoretical aspects of the subject, all within an exploratory context.

Graphic and Media Design
Graphic and Media Design builds on the rich heritage of graphic design education at London College of Communication. Our innovative and flexible approach encourages exploration of materials, media and methodologies across key subject areas including social design, branding, information design, typographic media and communication environments. Through our excellent global contacts, you also have the opportunity to take a directed year out in industry anywhere in the world.

This course acknowledges traditional values and specialist skills whilst recognising the changing and dynamic nature of graphic design. The programme is innovative and flexible with a strong employment record. It will give you the opportunity to specialise in future-facing areas of graphic design practice.

You can expect to be encouraged to be innovative and to initiate change, to integrate practice and theory and work individually and collaboratively. You’ll possess technical skills but not be slaves to them, be able to make connections between disparate activities, be concept driven and capable of working across media. You’ll understand the complexities of audience and how to utilise your studies to plan your future direction whether in work or through continuing studies.

Furthermore, you will explore a variety of materials, media and methodologies and develop skills relevant to a career as a broad-ranging design professional. You will also take part in live, collaborative projects with industry to develop your entrepreneurship and introduce you to our commercial partners. These have previously included Diabetes UK, British Film Institute (BFI), Interbrand, Dorling Kindersley, the Design Museum, International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD), YCN, Illy Coffee, NHS, Moleskin and D&AD.

The course is delivered by experienced practitioners, tutors and other specialists including visiting speakers.

Illustration and Visual Media
Illustration and Visual Media is not defined by a medium, material or style, but fuelled by a desire to communicate by whatever means are appropriate, be they sculptural, typographic, photographic, filmic, print-based or a combination of all of these. As the course philosophy suggests: Nothing is off limits.

This studio-based course aims to produce creative and innovative illustrators who are equipped to succeed in roles across the industry. You will explore the design principles of contemporary media while learning valuable traditional skills and gain a broad and distinctive range of visual languages working with animation, computing, photography and printmaking.

The course capitalises on the heritage of graphic design education at LCC by acknowledging traditional values and specialist skills while recognising the changing and dynamic nature of design and illustration.

Illustration and Visual Media seeks to challenge existing preconceptions and definitions of illustration, and encourages students to view themselves as thinkers as well as image makers. Taught by a team of practicing artists, designers, researchers and academics, all the tutors on the course are actively involved in scholarly investigation, graphic design and art related professional practice.

The course fosters an understanding of contemporary creative practice, critical debate and scholarly responsibility. The course offers you the intellectual and creative space to examine existing definitions of illustration whilst exploring future directions. This enables students to work in a broad range of media, processes and techniques.

Information and Interface Design
Design. Code. Use. Information and Interface Design is a specialised design-led, digitally-focused course exploring user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design for current and emerging technologies. Building on a foundational practice of graphic design, you’ll embrace the digital skills of coding, motion graphics and information design, preparing you to work in specialised screen-based areas such as design for the web, app design and interactive data visualisation. Designers with these skills are in great demand and this course will enable you to design for emerging areas like wearable technology, augmented reality and the internet of things.

Information and Interface Design offers a rigorous, practice-based design education with a thorough grounding in the digital skills of coding, animation and information design required to work in this expanding area of design. Interface design is growing enormously as digital products and services proliferate at ever increasing speed via the spread of digital devices and the internet. This demands designers who have
 a strong user-centred understanding of visual information and information design, and who also understand how to creative compelling micro narratives bringing information environments to life.

The course produces industry-ready designers with a creative, practical and critical understanding of new technologies who are excited by the potential of digital design practice.

To work in these areas in a design-led way the course introduces you to the core competencies of graphic and information design, alongside animation for design and coding for the web. One of the most fundamental skills of a designer working is in this area is the ability to coherently structure visual information and you will work on set projects that develop this ability as well as an applied digital skill set.

In Year Two you build on this and start to explore more complex interactivity and larger data sets. This leaves you in a strong position for the UX, UI design studio where you can apply both design and digital skills, producing web interface and app solutions. At the end of this year you look at applying these skills to areas of emerging technology such as augmented reality and wearable tech.

Interaction Design Arts
Create. Experience. Communicate. Interaction Design Arts is a practice-led, experimental course focusing on the relationship between people and designed objects and experiences. It explores the communicative potential of physical experience. You will work with narrative, moving image and filmmaking, alongside processes such as design prototyping and physical computing.

Interaction design requires designers to work fluidly in a multidisciplinary design environment across narrative, moving image and film-making, alongside processes such as design prototyping and physical computing. Interaction designers increasingly work at the intersection of the physical and the digital and often work at the research and development stage of innovative products, services and communications.

Interaction Design Arts is a multidisciplinary design course working with multiple mediums to craft purposeful communication and experience. Students are encouraged to actively play as they pursue projects through a core methodology of research, testing and iterative prototyping.

This is a practice-led course exploring the communicative potential of physical experience. Focusing on the relationships between people, designed objects and experiences, students will work with interaction, narrative and moving image, alongside processes such as design prototyping, film-making, coding and physical computing.

You will develop a personal perspective from which to answer complex design problems, embracing approaches such as critical design and exploring design for social change.

Working within the philosophy of ‘high-tech, low-tech and no-tech’ students are encouraged to pursue projects that put people at the centre of their design and arts practice. As well as developing personal work, students have the opportunity to regularly collaborate with local communities on long-term human-centred projects.

Our specialist studios are constructed as a designer’s playground that will nurture and encourage creativity and learning through the formation of a community of practice. There is also access to traditional media such as letterpress, printmaking and photography.

Drawing on a tradition of dynamism, exploration, prototyping and experimentation, students of Interaction Design Arts are taught that the only boundaries are those set by the imagination and that creative ideas hold sway over technology. Students on the course understand that design impacts the world at large and that they have a responsibility for the wider issues of sustainability and social inclusiveness.

Program overviews encompass full 3 year degree programs. Study abroad students are placed into year 1 or year 2 of the programs based on portfolio review.

Design for Branded Spaces
Design for Branded Spaces is a new future-facing course with a strong focus on interactive branded spaces enhanced by the latest digital technologies. It is aimed at students who are interested in designing interior, pop up, installation and event spaces for commercial and cultural brands. It is multidisciplinary and integrates practices from spatial, exhibition, scenographic and interaction disciplines to provide cutting edge experiences for consumers, customers and visitors.

The course offers students an insight into the future of spatial professions and has a special interest in working with commercial and cultural institutions to leverage their tangible and intangible assets within a global design and digital context. Designing spaces and experiences for brands is a thriving economy. Businesses and organisations recognise the value of experience design as a strategic tool to engage with consumers and audiences for long-term viability. People are not only looking for entertainment but also for original experiences and destinations.

The practical component of the course is underpinned by critical interrogation where students analyse what is at stake for corporations, designers, cultural organisations and audiences in the creation of spaces that blur the boundaries between commerce and culture, public and private. The course critically engages with branded spaces by drawing on theories, terms and debates from art and design history, cultural studies, sensory ethnography and affects studies.

Innovation, curiosity, creativity and the articulation of ideas through experimentation are central to the course experience. We will encourage you to see things differently and to design solutions that are unique to you both in concept and realisation.

You will develop your creativity and design knowledge through a range of practical and theoretical design practices. A lively studio culture is enhance by contextual and studies, and the development of professional practice skills essential in the competitive workplace.

You will be taught by an inspiring community of experienced designers, technical specialist and theorists in addition to visits from guest lecturers. You will also benefit from key thinkers and practitioners working across boundaries and at the cutting edge of their disciplines.

Students enrolled in Integrated Programs can choose to enroll in an additional 3 week 3 credit course that takes place prior to the start of their program. This optional add-on alters the arrival date, and carries an additional fee. Students can choose from the following two courses; for course details please view the program syllabi.

Add-on Course: European Art History (3 credits)
The add-on European Art History course is based at Chelsea College of Arts. The 3 week course offers a varied and stimulating introduction to art and design as it has developed in Europe since the Renaissance. Through focusing on specific themes and artifacts, ranging from architecture to photography and from the Sublime to Surrealism, it equips students with a basis of knowledge and enthusiasm for study and practice in a European context. A four day / three night trip to Berlin is included in the European Art History course. The Berlin trip includes: flights to Berlin, shared accommodation, breakfast and all entrance fees. The course offers an excellent opportunity to study alongside students from a wide variety of backgrounds and artistic disciplines.

Add-on Course: Creative Industries London (3 credits)
The add-on Creative Industries London course is based at London College of Communication. The 3 week course is designed to give students a solid foundation in theory and introduction to disruptive design, media and screen practices. Students take workshops in blogging, photography and video while learning in seminars about the networks of cultural power. The course includes visits to East London, creative cooperatives, the Bussey Building and Museum of Brands. This course offers an excellent opportunity to develop skills of contemporary communication practices.

Portfolio Requirements
Art & Design Programs: These programs require a 20-24 image digital portfolio. Portfolios should demonstrate art and design development, whether in a college project or in your personal work and should also show your research and creative process. Please ensure that images have been sized down appropriately.

Film & Sound Programs: Programs in this field require a two-minute video of film-related work that demonstrates your creativity in terms of the moving image. Pieces need not be highly finished, but for work that demonstrates your ideas, vision and potential. LCC does not accept work that is a montage of material cut to music. In such cases, your video should be submitted along with a 500-word written film analysis.

Communications & Journalism Programs: These programs require students to submit two written pieces that represent their knowledge and abilities in their given area of study.

Courses & Schedule
Since the study of art and design is different in Europe, study abroad students at London College of Communication find they are working more independently than at their home schools. Professors offer guidance and support to visiting students in order to help them fit seamlessly into their program of choice, but students should be keenly motivated and comfortable working with less supervision. Upon acceptance, students are placed in either Year 1 or Year 2 of the integrated semester program, depending on the student’s portfolio. Courses are predetermined as part of the overall degree program; information can be seen in syllabi. Courses offered in the overall degree program begin and end at different points throughout the year, therefore, some courses may or may not span the entire semester. Students receive their specific program’s schedules with days and times at academic orientation.

Welcome Event
Students are welcomed to their new city over a delicious dinner to mingle and get to know each other.

London Walking Tour
Students visit the Western part of the city accompanied by one of the finest local guides. The tour covers major sights such as Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and Trafalgar Square, but also takes students through quaint back streets to experience the true spirit of London.

Pub History Tour
Through old alleyways and amongst other famous sights of the city, students explore 2,000 years of London’s best pubs and inns, tabernas, alehouses and coaching inns frequented by famous poets and writers such as Oscar Wilde and Charles Dickens.

An Evening in London’s West End
London’s West End is the world’s premier home of English language theatre—a fact that even the most avid Broadway addict will (quietly and begrudgingly) admit. Students get to enjoy a top rated West End musical or play to experience what all the hype is about.

Weekend Trip to Bath, Somerset and Stonehenge
Students enjoy a weekend trip that begins in Bath with a traditional English pub lunch, followed by guided tours of the Fashion Museum and the Roman Baths. Students also take a whirlwind tour of some of the most famous historical sites in Wiltshire, including Lacock village, Castle Combe, the Avebury Stone Circles, and of course, Stonehenge.

Thanksgiving Dinner
Students spend an evening together with a traditional American Thanksgiving Dinner at one of London’s top American restaurants. The evening provides delicious food and great company, for a little home comfort.

Farewell Event
Students celebrate the end of a great term and say their goodbyes over a pint!

Standard Housing: Student apartment
SAI student apartments are convenient, clean, and well equipped, with shared occupancy bedrooms (upgrade to private bedroom available). Apartments are within a 30 minute walk/tube ride of all London campuses. Typical residences house 2 – 8 students and contain a combination of private and shared bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and living areas. Furnishings, a washing machine, basic kitchen supplies, bed linens and towels are provided. All apartments are equipped with wireless internet. SAI on-site staff is available to respond to any maintenance needs that may arise.

Alternate Housing: Independent
Students seeking independent housing can do so, for a reduction in the SAI program fee. Please contact SAI for details.

Passports should be valid for 3 months after planned departure from the UK.

Student Visas
European Union citizens attending any SAI London school for an academic term do not require a student visa. United States citizens attending any London school for one academic term (6 months or less) do not require a student visa prior to arrival. All others should check with the British Embassy to determine if a visa is required and the process for obtaining one.
