Look. Select. Combine. The one year Master’s in Fashion Styling and Visual Merchandising at Domus Academy investigates the role of the fashion stylist, who selects the clothing for fashion editorials and advertisements, alongside the role of the visual merchandiser, who creates fashion displays to provide customers with fresh in-store experiences. The degree merges these two roles to create a new professional profile: that of the “visual fashion brand communicator,” who directs the visual communication of a fashion brand. As students study to become visual fashion brand communicators, they learn to convey a brand’s identity and values through visual storytelling tools and create a compelling visual language for the brand.

Program Aims & Objectives
The Master in Fashion Styling and Visual Merchandising provides students with a Master’s level experience in the field of Fashion Styling and Visual Merchandising through the peculiar Domus Academy teaching/learning methods, which also involve constant dialogues with professionals, creative people coming from the fashion world and companies. The program aims at training professionals on the theme of Fashion Styling and Visual Merchandising, giving birth to a new professional figure: the Visual Fashion Brand Communicator, a global “ director” of the visual communication of a fashion brand with an integrated approach of creative aspects.

The program aims at helping students develop a critical appraisal methodology in the analysis of fashion advertising and its history, in the use of graphic design tools, and the crucial importance of aesthetic in fashion. The analysis of visual merchandising strategies for showrooms, concept stores, mono-brand stores and department stores, all through the understanding of the window’s display is another key element along with the understanding and acquisition of the necessary tools to create a visual strategic language for a fashion brand. Students will also develop a theoretical, analytical and critical approach towards relevant issues related to a specific segment into the fashion stylist, visual merchandising and brand communication field.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, students will have:

  • Acquired advanced knowledge of Fashion Culture, Fashion System, Fashion Stylist, Visual Merchandising and Fashion Trends;
  • Properly contextualized the movements, styles and theories of modern and contemporary Fashion in their respective periods;
  • Developed an advanced critical awareness of the evolution of the Fashion Stylist’s role as a practitioner;
  • Gained critical awareness of the key role of the Visual Merchandiser in the Fashion System;
  • Understood and acquired the necessary tools in order to create a visual strategic language for a Fashion brand.
  • Gained critical awareness of the specific expressive languages pertaining to channels such as the web, video, photography and the new emerging media.
  • Demonstrated an advanced theoretical, analytical and critical approach towards relevant issues related to a specific segment in the Fashion Stylist, Visual Merchandising and Brand Communication field;
  • Developed the ability to be critical and self-critical as well as being creative.

Degree & Certification
Upon graduation from Domus Academy, you’ll earn a degree that’s recognized around Europe and the world—an Academic Master’s Degree (60 ECTS credits) accredited by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR). The Academic Master’s Degree is validated through NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano. You’ll also earn a second valuable qualification: the Domus Academy Master’s Diploma.

Domus Academy’s accreditation has helped build relationships with prestigious companies, so you have the chance to gain practical work experience during your course of study. An accredited degree, plus the practical experience you gain through an internship, shows employers that you received a top-quality education and that you bring industry-relevant knowledge and skills to the table when you join their team. Domus Academy’s accreditation also means that the relevant academic credits you earn at Domus Academy will transfer to other institutions if you choose to work toward another master’s or a doctoral-level degree.

Career Opportunities
The aim of the Master is to make the participants able to pursue a career as a Fashion Stylist or a Visual Merchandiser, starting their own business or working for fashion companies advertising agencies, TV, as a celebrity assistants, and in all areas involving visual communication.

Declaration of Value
In order to receive the Academic Master Degree at the completion of the program students holding a non-Italian Bachelor Degree are required to have their degree validated prior to starting the program. In order to do so, students must contact the Italian Embassy or Consulate in the country where the degree was issued in order to ask for the so called “perfezionamento documenti”, consisting of:

  • Translation into Italian (by certified translator) of the student’s High School Diploma*
  • Translation into Italian (by certified translator) of the student’s High School Academic Transcripts*
  • Translation into Italian (by certified translator) of the student’s Bachelor Degree*
  • Translation into Italian (by certified translator) of the student’s Undergraduate Academic Transcripts*
  • “Dichiarazione di valore in loco” (Declaration of Value) of the student’s High School Diploma & Bachelor Degree. (The “Dichiarazione di valore in loco” is the document attesting that the study qualification obtained in the student’s country of residence is valid for accessing Italian Universities or Academies)

*Please Note: All Consulates vary and they may have slightly different requirements. You must contact the Consulate, which holds jurisdiction where the diploma/degree issuing school is located.

Housing is not included in SAI Select Services Programs. However, your SAI Admissions Counselor will be happy to provide you with information and recommendations for local housing agencies, as well as school-provided apartments. Students who do not have prior housing arrangements should begin speaking with their Admissions Counselor as soon as possible.

Passports
Passports should be valid for 3 months after planned departure from Italy.

Student Visas
In accordance with Italian law students studying in Italy for 90 days or more are required to obtain a student visa. Those with Italian/EU citizenship are exempted. Non-US nationals should consult their local Consulate for information on student visa requirements.

Students must appear in person at the Italian Consulate to present their student visa application. Our Student Visa Office is available to assist students in getting ready for the appointment; SAI provides student visa consulting for all our students at no cost.
