Istituto Marangoni's semester-long programs are designed to expose visiting students to the excitement of the fashion and design world, while helping them develop the practical, creative, and business management skills necessary to flourish in this fast-changing global industry. Students choose from one of the following intensive tracks: Fashion Design, Fashion Business, Fashion Styling & Merchandising, Interior Design, Product Design, and Visual Design. All programs encourage participants to develop their own signature style or ‘visual language’, as well as broadening horizons for personal growth and future career development. Each block-style program yields a total of 15 credits per semester.

Academic Year: Junior (3rd year) or above.
Subject Experience: Students must have completed at least one year of a fashion-related program.
Cumulative GPA:* 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale)

Fashion Design
This program covers skills in fashion illustration and garment construction, as well as investigating the engaging fashion industry through effective research, the basis to any fashion collection.
Fashion Design & Womenswear
This program focuses on femininity and the changing female silhouette, in order to inject creative flair in the competitive world of womenswear apparel. Classes in fashion illustration design, pattern making, and garment construction guide participants through various stages in the research, design, and style process.
Fashion Design & Accessories
This program teaches design techniques and production methods covering shoes, bags, and fashion collection design, improving skills in areas including illustration, and 2D / 3D design, and production processes and techniques.
Fashion Business
Business professionals must possess a thorough knowledge of the fashion panorama in order to become experts in the ‘business of fashion’. This program covers skills in business strategy, digital luxury, and vision planning, as well as investigating the engaging fashion industry through effective creative research.
Fashion Business & Buying
This program covers skills in trends, branding and product lifecycle, as well as investigating contemporary product placement and management control, all within the fast paced fashion industry.
Fashion Business Communication & Media
Communicate, connect and create a ‘buzz’ with consumers through different media techniques and channels. This program looks at key issues in contemporary communication channels, including online and offline tools, video, and printed media using images and successful copy.
Fashion Styling & Creative Direction
This program further develops skills in styling and direction including graphic design, photography, production and set design, as well as broadening horizons for personal growth and future career development. This inspiring program encourages participants to develop new narratives to ensure that what goes in the fashion magazines, appears online or on the catwalk, communicates the right messages, at the right time, and to the right target audience.
Fashion Styling & Visual Merchandising
Learn the ‘art’ of presenting products to ‘attract, captivate, & engage’, and ultimately sell to the fashion consumer. This semester course looks at the dynamics of communication including styling a product, in store display and layout, the use of POS, and successful product presentation. This program aims to strengthen skills in communicating a brand message and identity through styling and display, as well as broadening horizons for personal growth and future career development.
Interior Design
Interpreting space for the way we live. This program takes a contemporary approach to design covering the main areas of contemporary lifestyle interiors: residential, commercial, retail, public spaces, and exhibition design. Participants investigate the ‘identity’ of the given space, taking on-board demands of physical wellbeing, as well performance needs of the space in question. This inspiring program aims to strengthen skills in interior design, combining technical aspects in construction with contemporary design elements, fundamental for the successful management and development of design proposals.
Product Design
Designing luxury furniture, bespoke one-off items, or products for industrial design and commercialization. Semester courses in product design combine a mix of applied manual, technical and digital design skills in order to improve and develop creative talent in design processes, methods, and final product realization. Courses cover key subjects in design, trends, materials, and 3D modeling, as well as contemporary insights in the design process for example, the sociology of design, communicating design, and design anthropology; researching and developing innovative ideas that match the needs and requirements of a client brief, or for the final product user in contemporary design proposals.

Courses & Schedule
Students choose one of several tracks (see Details & Program Overview) upon applying to the SAI program. Each track is made up of specific courses for a total of 15 credits. Course meeting times vary each week. Students receive a timetable of classes at orientation.

Arrival & Housing Check-in Students arrive into the Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) or Milan Linate Airport (LIN). SAI airport pickup is provided between 10:00am and 3:00pm, and students are transferred to SAI housing. |

Pre-departure and Re-entry services
SAI offers all students the Viva Experience: frequent cultural activities, at no extra cost, for participants to get to know their community, city and country. Following is a sample of the activities included in this program. Please note that actual activities may differ.
Welcome Event
SAI welcomes students to Milan with aperitivi at one of the hidden and local trendy spots in the Naviglii district.
Duomo Rooftop and Milan Walking Tour
Students admire the architecture of the spire-laden Duomo up close as they walk among the buttresses and statues and enjoy a panoramic view of the city from the rooftop. Following the tour, the group discovers the fashion district including the Galleria, Montenapoleone and La Scala.
Lake Como
Students will take a break from the bustling city of Milan and head to nearby Lake Como, which has been a popular retreat for the wealthy since Roman times. The group will first discover Como and then take a ferry to Torno, one of the most beautiful pearls of the Lake.
Wine Tasting
Enoteca Ronchi has been the “wine lounge” in Milan since 1865 and is synonymous with fine wine. Students enjoy an evening of wine tasting in this historic setting.
Cooking Lesson
Students will have the opportunity to learn the secrets of the Italian cuisine and to create their own antipasto, primo and dessert. This experience gives students a taste of the Italian cooking tradition and concludes with eating the 3-course meal together.
Weekend Excursion in Turin
Turin is a city of majesty and sanctity with its own touch of French Flair. Full of Baroque palaces and porticos, surrounded by castles and the majestic Alps, Turin was the home to the Italian royals until it was transformed from royal decadence into an industrial hub when Fiat was founded in 1899. Since hosting the 2006 Winter Olympics, the city is now multicultural with a strong contemporary art and music subculture.
Armani Silos visit
Students will have the opportunity to experience and learn the 40+ years of the designer’s career, including 400 outfits and 200 accessories from Giorgio Armani’s ready-to-wear collections from 1980 to the present.
Chocolate Experience
Students will visit a typical chocolate factory run by the same family for over 100 years. The group will experience a tasting journey through different kinds of “cioccolatini” with an opportunity to experience the real Italian hot chocolate.
Milan Coffee Festival
Students will lget an inside look into the world of Italian coffee and the various ways to prepare it. The activity includes tasting of the different types of Italian coffee.
Visit to La Scala Opera House
SAI students get an exclusive look behind the scenes of one of the most famous opera houses in the world, the Teatro della Scala. The group explores some of the history of this marvelous building, the famous people who have graced its stage and see the set design of the current show.
Farewell Event
Students celebrate the end of a successful term abroad and say their goodbyes over a delicious Italian meal.
Standard Housing: Student apartment
SAI student apartments are convenient and well equipped, with shared occupancy bedrooms (option to upgrade to private bedroom, if available). Typical residences house 2 – 8 students and contain a combination of private and shared bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and living areas. Furnishings, a washing machine, basic kitchen supplies, bed linens and towels are provided. All apartments are equipped with wireless Internet. Housing assignments are single gender; other housing configurations may be available under limited circumstances. SAI on-site staff is available to respond to any maintenance needs that may arise.
Passports
Passports should be valid for 3 months after planned departure from Italy.
Student Visas
In accordance with Italian law students studying in Italy for 91 or more days are required to obtain a student visa. Those with Italian/EU citizenship are exempted. Non-US nationals should consult their local Consulate for information on student visa requirements.
Students must appear in person at the Italian Consulate to present their student visa application. Our Student Visa Office is available to assist students in getting ready for the appointment; SAI provides student visa consulting for all our students at no cost.
