SAI semester study abroad students at NABA Rome have the opportunity to delve into design fields under the mentorship of leading industry professionals. Students choose 3 to 6 courses within one of the design-based concentrations: Fashion Design; Fashion Styling and Communication; and Liberal Studies. Those with varying academic needs can also select courses across all concentrations for a total of 12 - 18 US credits.

The course examines the role of the Italian contribution to the history of modern design. As a result of a long social and formal process that has its origin, more than in other circumstances, in the avant-garde movement of Futurism, design culture in Italy has always been much more than a mere, functional planning approach: thanks to the efforts and the ideas of the many actors that have taken part to its (practical and critical) definition, the word “design” has entered in the core of Italian creativity as one of its most powerful component. Students are introduced into this fascinating world through the analysis of several (cultural, social, artistic, industrial) aspects and a chronological comparison with the international debate and production. The course also intends to provide an overview of the history of graphic design in Italy as mirror of society's evolution.

Fashion Design | Course #: FD FC 300 | Open
The aim of the course is to provide students a general knowledge of the history of Fashion and Costume. The fashion is a form of language, used to communicate who we are, to describe our society, economy, religion and many other things; it represents "The Spirit of the Time". This would explain why clothes are nowadays studied by psychologists, sociologists, economists, anthropologists and art historians. The aim of the course is to analyze the costume as a form of communication within the society in different historical periods. The studies include also the historical evolution in costume making techniques, from draping to pattern cutting, with the use of a variety of fabrics and materials.

Course Overview
Introduction: the modern fashion system and its different categories, such as Haute Couture, pret-a-porter, made-to-measure, mass market. The origin of clothes: from body painting to fabric weaving. The purpose of costume: why we wear what we wear. Dress as a symbol. The symbolic function of adornments and accessories. Analysis of human body proportions and concept of silhouette. The evolution of shapes and techniques, through Antique Egiptian, Mesopotamian, Cretan, Antique Greek and Roman costume. The relation between dress and body in different cultures. Byzantine and Medieval costume. The influence of Christian religion. The evolution of military costume and armours as a basis for the development of Western style of tight clothing and corsets. How chivalry and courtly love changed the image of Western woman. Italian Renaissance courts and their traditions of luxury fabrics, dresses, jewelry as origins of the Italian Style and of fashion phenomenon. The 16th century costumes in France, Spain, Germany and Britain: the differences and mutual influences. Perfumes and cosmetics. History of lingerie. The 17th century costume in France and Holland, the flamboyant baroque of Versailles versus Calvinistic black. The 18th century: French court rococo style, the Industrial Revolution and development of textile industry in Britain. The influence of the French Revolution on costume. The lessons will offer also the analysis of current fashion, textile and design trends.

Fashion Design | Course #: FD FD 310 | Open
During the course each student works on their individual prototype. The fashion design course teaches students how to design a fashion item, including the construction of the pattern and the sewing of the garment with tailoring techniques. An overview of research practice will enable the students to learn how concepts, moods and themes are conceived and developed to provide inspiration for clothing, color and shape. This will include how to draw a garment. They will develop their creative skills through studio and workshop practice and work on the construction of the pattern and the realization of the prototype with handcraft tailoring methods.

Students will be exposed to the Italian Accessory Design field. They will comprehend the evolution of contemporary luxury, the meaning of Italian heritage and bespoke handcraft as well as Italian modern industry. The universe of accessories - bags, shoes, small leather goods, etc…- is known as one of the most vital and interesting in contemporary fashion from the creative standpoint. Accessory Design is currently one of the most important areas in the economy tied to the worldwide fashion system. During the course, students will learn how to design a concept and create an accessory collection able to face market requests.

The course is a close examination of integrated marketing strategies, processing how to communicate the value of a product or service to customers, for the purpose of selling the product or service. It will also examine promotional tools that can be employed towards marketing goods and services on an international level.

Course Overview
Students will be lead through the course by lectures, hand-outs (consisting of relevant information), class assignments, field research, and practical learning by doing. Students are expected and urged to engage in self study and preparation. In conclusion, they will have to present a final project which will connect all of the elements focused on during the semester.

The course brings attention to the multiple disciplines that are intertwined with the meaning and significance of a dressed body. By tracing either ancient and modern themes, by analyzing the current social behavior it is possible to demonstrate how fashion is highly linked to culture, economy, political and religious ideas and to human behaviors passed down unchanged from generation to generation. In this perspective, the anthropological discipline is applied to prove that the way you dress is an aspect that deserves an attentive analysis in order to understand the current behaviors and element of primary importance to face an advanced approach to the fashion project in terms of research and development.

Course Overview
Through lectures and experiential learning, the student is led to investigate the theme of the human body discovering its true size and its sensory and phenomenal aspects. It allows questioning the key concepts of language and the fashion phenomenon such as: novelty, taste, talent, identity and homologation. It aims to demonstrate how profound the question of self-representation can be and how complex the relationship is between the lived-in body and the body represented by the fashion world. The module provides students with the basics for the acquisition of an anthropological point of view on fashion, stimulating creativity through knowledge of symbols.

Fashion Styling is designed to expose students to the understanding of the process with a special focus on Italian Fashion Style.

The course develops students initial understanding and experience in Styles hunting and Image styling as the foundations of fashion and project approach with the objective to further stimulate their potential skills. Milan is a strategic city, the international capital of fashion. Luxury and Bespoken Craft. Contemporary Art and Business. Creativity and wearable/creativity. A perfect field where to observe, visit art galleries and fashion stores, take pictures on the streets and interview fashion professionals.

Marketing and social macro trends represent the main basis from where to start a process for a product styling line.
From art to social trend: students will learn how to incorporate all information for an innovative application of the trend skills which take in consideration the marketing strategies.

The course is organized around thematic areas:
Image Analysis
- Learning how to read an image, looking through layers, is one of the most important skills that a fashion stylist needs to be successful. The research begin from the fundamental overview of art painting, digital illustration, advertising campaign and photography.

Cool Hunting, from aesthetic to fashion. Scouting now to forecast the future.
- Analysis of the cool concept and practical exercises on it. Milano ground fashion scene research. The outcome will be a presentation of the identified trends, composed by images, key words and supporting materials such as textiles and objects of different kind.

Fashion is a process of creative synthesis of various stimuli, sensations and references coming from many different fields: art, product design, architecture and communication. Developing a personal innovative vision is the upstream step of designing a contemporary collection and trends research is the tool supporting a proposal that is really creative and innovative. Research is a crucial step for the design process, and without deep, rich and varied research sources, innovation cannot exist. The more in depth research is, the greater is the potential for idea generation. Cool Hunting as research methodology is a powerful tool to create a new vision of fashion able to give uniqueness to the outcome of the work.

Students are instilled with a sense of purpose, encouraged to work hard, and helped to develop their ideas and capabilities to the full. Throughout the lessons and practical assignments students will be kept focused toward their goal, which is the final exam.

Graphic Design

The relationships between consumers and brands are increasingly based on symbolic, relational and emotional values consistent with the brand identity and its evolution. The "Brand Identity" creates a relationship with the consumer and therefore the perception the consumer has of a company is closely tied to the image he will have to that company, that brand. The course is dedicated to the acquisition of tools for research, analysis, strategy and visualization of brand identity, in order to transform symbolic, intangible and irrational values that a brand expresses into a project of visual communication conscious and creative, able to integrate the analytical, conceptual and technical skills in line with the new role of visual designer the professional market requires.

The course, consisting of theoretical lessons and practical exercises, aims to develop knowledge of the tools and methods of work of Indesign CS5 in relation to the demands posed by the professional world of printing and publishing.

The functions and tools of the program will be analyzed while introducing the basics of graphic design and technical issues related to it.

Through a path marked by projects, the course will pay particular attention to the use of lettering and composition in creating editorial layouts creative and effective. The comparative learning of technical and creative notions connected to graphic design will enable students to acquire an adequate knowledge of software’s applications to graphic design fields, publishing in particular.

Courses & Registration
NABA courses run Monday – Friday between 9:00am and 6:00pm. Students complete their course registration during the SAI application process by selecting their primary and alternate course choices. Course schedules are confirmed 3 weeks prior to the program start. Students receive their official schedule (with days and times) at orientation.

Students fly into Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO). SAI airport pickup is provided between 9:00am and 12:00pm, and students are transferred to SAI housing.

Welcome to Rome and the Roman Hills
SAI welcomes students with a day trip to Frascati in the beautiful Roman hills. Students tour the town and discuss its history, enjoy the views from a family-run vineyard, and share a meal featuring local specialties.

Olive Oil Harvest & Tasting
Students will visit an olive grove farm in the countryside of Rome where they will learn how Italy’s prestigious extra-virgin olive oil is produced. They will see firsthand how olives are harvested from groves and visit a traditional frantoio (olive oil mill) to see the olives being freshly pressed into oil. Finally they will taste the oil and enjoy a light lunch featuring the freshly pressed olive oil.

Discover Monti
Once the slum of ancient Rome, Monti is now one of the city’s coolest and most charming neighborhoods home to vintage stores, art studios, chic cafés, and quaint squares. Students will visit Domus Aurea (“Golden House”), an impressive palace built by Emperor Nero, and go on a virtual reality tour. They will then explore the neighborhood’s shops and conclude with lunch at a famous local trattoria.

Ancient Rome Tour
Visit the Centro Storico, Rome’s historic center, and step back in time on a guided tour of some of the most iconic monuments of the eternal city: the Spanish steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, and Piazza Navona.

Hike to Janiculum Hill
Walk up to the Janiculum Hill for a bird’s eye view of Roma! As the sun sets over the city, enjoy a refreshing “grattachecca” – Italian ice – and take in the amazing views of your new home!

Survival Italian Lessons
Get a head start on overcoming the language barrier! SAI offers two 3-hour Survival Italian lessons that cover basic conversation and useful phrases to start navigating your new home. Learn to ask for directions, shop with local fruit vendors or order a cappuccino at the local cafe. The lessons provide a practical and hands-on approach to learning Italian.

A Taste of Rome Food Tour
Students get to know their new home by exploring the Trastevere neighborhood and tasting some of Rome’s most celebrated culinary traditions.

Treasures of Tivoli
Just a short train ride outside of Rome, Tivoli is a pristine mountain town with cascading waterfalls, exquisite gardens and world-renowned historical sites. Students tour one of Tivoli’s most enchanting gardens, Villa d’Este, which is a jaw dropping gem and a UNESCO world heritage site. The afternoon ends with lunch at a nearby farm featuring all locally produced specialties.

Italian Cooking Lessons
Students join Italian cooking lessons taught by local Roman Chef Andrea Consoli. Each lesson covers how to make a traditional Roman three-course meal that is easy to recreate independently. At the end of the lesson, students enjoy their own homemade Italian meal.

Farewell Evening
Students celebrate the end of a successful term abroad and say their goodbyes over a delicious Italian meal.

Standard Housing: Student apartment
SAI student apartments are convenient, clean, and well equipped, with shared occupancy bedrooms (upgrade to private bedroom available). Typical residences house 2 – 8 students and contain a combination of private and shared bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and living areas. Furnishings, a washing machine, basic kitchen supplies, bed linens and towels are provided. All apartments are equipped with wireless internet. Housing configurations are designated as female, male, and in some locations, gender-inclusive. SAI on-site staff is available to respond to any maintenance needs that may arise.

Passports should be valid for 3 months after planned departure from Italy.

Student Visas
In accordance with Italian law students studying in Italy for 91 days or more are required to obtain a student visa. Those with Italian/EU citizenship are exempted. Non-US nationals should consult their local Consulate for information on student visa requirements.

Students must appear in person at the Italian Consulate to present their student visa application. Our Student Visa Office is available to assist students in getting ready for the appointment; SAI provides student visa consulting for all our students at no cost.
