Small Acts, Big Impact: Making a Difference while Studying Abroad

When I first arrived in Rome, I knew I wanted to get more involved with the community and didn’t want to be considered just “another tourist.” I wanted to make an impact and dedicate my time to benefiting others. I wanted to participate in activities that truly made a difference in the lives of the people who were so willing to let me call their neighborhood my own for the next few months.

My first volunteering experience packaging food!

When I was given the opportunity to volunteer through the SAI program and John Cabot University, I was a bit hesitant at first, as I was unsure of what to expect and didn’t know if I would make that much of a difference. However, getting the opportunity to volunteer at places like Oratorio del Caravita and Vo. Re. Co truly changed my perspective.

My second week at the same location that I love!

While volunteering, I was able to make meaningful connections by helping prepare and distribute meals to people experiencing poverty, homelessness, and food insecurity. I also got to share meaningful experiences with people in these communities by exchanging stories and learning about their cultures and what goes on in their neighborhoods.

One of the churches that hosted people within the community!

Through these experiences, I was able to form meaningful connections with people in these communities and begin to fully understand the social issues affecting local residents. I developed a deeper cultural awareness and learned to look beyond the typical tourist experience. Ultimately, having the opportunity to work with local residents and see a different side of the community has forever changed my perspective on being abroad. Being able to give back just a little of my time to those who have been so welcoming has truly made an impact on my daily life moving forward.
