Program Overview

SAI students studying abroad at CETT have the choice between completing a program in Business, Hospitality & Tourism or Gastronomy. Both programs offer immersive coursework in the fields, giving students applied experiences in Barcelona’s dynamic tourism scene. Students in the Hospitality & Tourism program select 4 – 5 elective courses for a total of 12 – 15 credits, while students in the Gastronomy program enroll in three required courses and select two electives for a total of 15 credits.

Students select their program:

Gastronomy Program: students enroll in one of two tracks and enroll in a combination of mandatory and elective courses within the Food Culture and Culinary Arts in the Mediterranean department. For details see Academic Details below.

Business, Hospitality & Tourism Program: students select a concentration from Business, Hospitality, and Tourism, but are free to enroll in any combination of elective courses. All students are encouraged to enroll in the Spanish Language and Culture course in order to get the most from their semester.

The language of instruction for each class is clearly indicated on the schedule for a given term. Students who wish to attend courses in Spanish must prove their language proficiency

Note: Some US universities have a special payment arrangement with SAI, where your university covers part of your fees on your behalf, and you pay the remaining fees directly to SAI. Not sure if this applies to you? Check with your study abroad office or your SAI Admissions Counselor.

SAI student apartments offer a comfortable, community-focused living experience in fully equipped spaces. Apartments typically house 2 – 8 students and feature a mix of shared-occupancy and private bedrooms, along with kitchen, bathroom, and a common area. Each unit is move-in ready with essential furnishings, a washing machine, basic kitchen supplies, bed linens, towels, and wireless internet. Housing is arranged as female, male, and, in select locations, gender-inclusive. SAI’s on-site staff are available to promptly assist with any maintenance needs throughout the program.

Private bedrooms in student apartments offer a private bedroom with a shared bathroom. SAI student apartments offer a comfortable, community-focused living experience in fully equipped spaces. Gastronomy Program
SAI students enrolled in the Food Culture and Culinary Arts in the Mediterranean at CETT choose from the following two program tracks:

Track 1 (for students with no background in culinary studies): Students enroll in three mandatory courses (below), and select an additional two elective courses for a total of 15 US credits.

Required Uniform & Knife Kit
All students in this program are required to have knives and a uniform. Students are welcome to bring these items from home or to purchase them from CETT.

Business, Hospitality & Tourism Program
SAI students select a concentration from Business, Hospitality, and Tourism, but are free to enroll in any combination of elective courses. All students are encouraged to enroll in the Spanish Language and Culture course in order to get the most from their semester. Most subjects are taught in English, while some are taught in Spanish, especially those related to Spanish culture and society. The language of instruction for each class is clearly indicated on the schedule for a given term. Students who wish to attend courses in Spanish must prove their language proficiency by showing that they have achieved an intermediate level; a score equivalent to level B1 as measured by a CEFR-equivalent language exam. Certificates issued by the home university are also accepted.

1.5 Credit Courses
Students have the opportunity to enroll in two 1.5 credit courses in place of one 3 credit course. 1.5 credit courses include 30 contact hours and are open to all students.

Course Registration

Students are asked to select their primary and alternate courses upon enrollment. SAI’s Barcelona Admissions Counselor will help guide students through this process.

Optional Certificate

SAI International Service Certificate (ISC)
The SAI International Service Certificate (ISC) offers students the opportunity to engage directly with their host community through volunteer service. Working with local organizations and supported by SAI staff, students build practical skills, cultural awareness, and meaningful connections. This certificate recognizes a strong commitment to service abroad.

SAI Viva Experience

SAI offers all students the Viva Experience: frequent cultural activities, at no extra cost, for participants to get to know their community, city and country. Following is a sample of the activities included in this program. Please note that actual activities may differ.

Passport & Visa

Passports
Passports should be valid for at least 1 year after planned departure from Europe.

Student Visas
U.S. students studying in Spain for 91 days or more are required to obtain a student visa. Therefore U.S. students are required to obtain one for this program. Students with Spanish/EU citizenship are exempt, and non-U.S. nationals should consult their local consulate for requirements.

SAI’s Student Visa Office supports students throughout the visa application process through the included SAI 360° Services. The following optional services are also available:

Student Visa Application Review (additional fee): SAI’s visa team provides a full review of your application to position yourself for a simple and streamlined application process.
Student Visa Processing (additional fee; available for some Consulates): SAI’s visa team submits your application on your behalf, eliminating the need to travel to a Consulate for an appointment.
