Studying abroad doesn’t mean you have to miss your chance to vote. Most U.S. citizens age 18 or older living abroad are eligible to vote by absentee ballot. If you’ll be studying abroad this Fall 2026, a little preparation is all it takes to cast your ballot from overseas.

Step 1: Register or Update Registration
Before you travel, check that you’re registered to vote and that your voter information is up to date. If you need to register or update your registration, start with Vote.gov, which will direct you to your state’s registration process.
Keep in mind that registration deadlines and requirements vary by state, and some states require you to register before leaving the U.S.
Tip: If your state offers electronic ballot delivery, include your email address when completing your registration or absentee ballot request.
Step 2: Request Your Absentee Ballot
To vote from abroad, you’ll need to submit a Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). In many states, the FPCA can also be used to register to vote if you haven’t already done so.
Check your state’s election deadlines before submitting your request, and pay attention to when your completed ballot must be returned. Depending on your state’s rules, you’ll receive your ballot electronically or by mail.
If you choose to receive your ballot by mail while abroad, we recommend having it sent to the SAI office in the city where you will be studying abroad.
Step 3: Return Your Ballot
Once your ballot arrives, complete it and return it according to your state’s instructions. Return options vary and may include mail, email, fax, or another approved method.
If you have questions while abroad, the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) offers state-specific guidance, and your nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate can provide general information about overseas voting.
