You probably have already begun researching the different locations and schools you want to study at. You may even have a top five list or the dream program you’ve had since freshman year (i.e. me). I already “knew” what I wanted to do and was dead set on going to Florence until I came across the Two City Program. I love how small and intimate Cinque Terre is, and going during the fall semester means I can go to the rocky beaches and swim before it gets cold. The class sizes are smaller compared to other schools, and it is a great chance to get acclimated to Italian life before moving to Florence. Here are some things that stood out to me that I think I wouldn’t get to experience anywhere else.

Reason #1: The Seafood
When you first think of a coastal city, what is the first thing you think of? Probably eating fish. Ligurian food culture is the freshest I’ve ever had, and at an amazing price. Many restaurants and pescatori serve only the same-day catches. Mussels, calamari, prawns, fish, and more are delicious and go great with pasta. You can walk down to the fish market and buy fish or squid that were caught that morning.

Reason #2: The Villages
Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare each have their own charms, and it is fun getting lost and explore its colorful labyrinths. Go to Monterosso for its rocky beaches or to Manarola or Riomaggiore for its epic cliff jumping. There are also hiking trails that connect the villages together. When you’re tired, stop at a fruit shack and drink a lemon slushie while enjoying the sea. Finish the day off by watching the sunset and then enjoy the nightlife.

Reason #3: The Slow Life
If you’re a little put off by having many places closed during the afternoon or on Sundays, it is actually a blessing in disguise. Lunches and dinners can take many hours, but you’ll enjoy every moment of it. Or simply walking around in the piazzas and being in the moment is enjoyable after a long day of class. It is a stark difference from your home campus, but a good one. You’ll find yourself with more time to do what you want to do, so take advantage of it. I never have time to read a good book, but now I find myself lost in one for hours.
Perhaps you want a coastal life but are not sure if your schedule or class requirements will be satisfied. The Two City Program is a great compromise where you can take required classes but at the same time get to be immersed in the small-town life.
