Program Overview

SAI’s 12 week non-credit or 6 credit internship semester program invites participants to experience the professional working environment in Barcelona, while building tangible skills in their chosen field. Completing an international internship also gives participants a competitive advantage in the global workforce by demonstrating cross-cultural competencies. Internships are available in a wide variety of areas, including Finance/Accounting, Communications, Design, Education, Hospitality, and many more. While Spanish language proficiency is not required, it may open up more internship options.

Internships

The SAI internship program in Barcelona is unpaid and awards 3 US academic credits. Students also have the option to complete the program as non-credit, at a reduced cost. Please contact your SAI Admissions Counselor for more information.

The 8 week internship program consists of approximately 150 total hours of on-site professional experience (about 20 hours per week). Weekly totals may vary slightly, depending upon the needs of the organization where the student is placed. This intensive internship program is designed for college students who wish to compress significant professional experience into a relatively short period of time.

Note: Some US universities have a special payment arrangement with SAI, where your university covers part of your fees on your behalf, and you pay the remaining fees directly to SAI. Not sure if this applies to you? Check with your study abroad office or your SAI Admissions Counselor.

May 1 2027	50% of Total Program Fee Due (Students whose deposit payment date is on or after this date will have a deadline of 5 business days after submitting the deposit.)
May 15 2027	Financial Aid Agreement & Financial Aid Program Deposit Deadline Applicable to students wishing to utilize SAI financial aid payment deferment process. (Students whose deposit payment date is on or after this date will have a deadline of 5 business days after the deposit.)
June 1 2027	SAI Scholarship Application Deadline Complete application due by 11:59pm Pacific Time.
June 15 2027	SAI Financial Aid Verification Deadline Applicable to students wishing to utilize SAI financial aid payment deferment process.
July 1 2027	Balance of Total Program Fee Due

Budgeting


Airfare to/from Barcelona	$950 – $1,800
Meals Includes groceries and eating out.	$700 – $1,000 / month
Personal Expenses	$300 – $350 / month
Transportation within Barcelona Public transportation with some taxi rides.	$100 – $150 / month

SAI student apartments offer a comfortable, community-focused living experience in fully equipped spaces. Apartments typically house 2 – 8 students and feature a mix of shared-occupancy and private bedrooms, along with kitchen, bathroom, and a common area. Each unit is move-in ready with essential furnishings, a washing machine, basic kitchen supplies, bed linens, towels, and wireless internet. Housing is arranged as female, male, and, in select locations, gender-inclusive. SAI’s on-site staff are available to promptly assist with any maintenance needs throughout the program.

To ensure maximum benefit from the internships, participants will reflect upon their experiences throughout the term. Such guided reflection will be facilitated by the completion of various assignments and self-evaluation exercises. A detailed syllabus is available upon request.

Application Requirements

Below please find more detail on the application requirements for this program:

Professional cover letter: The professional cover letter should include a self-introduction, as well as information about your professional sector of interest, and any reference contacts you wish to provide (recommended).

Resume: The resume should include a comprehensive description of your academic and professional experience to date. Feel free to include information about any special skills you possess.

Letter of recommendation: Please provide one (1) letter of recommendation. It may be from professors, university staff, or former workplace supervisors. Please do not provide recommendations from family members or social acquaintances; these recommendations should be academic or professional in nature.

Interview: Once your application is complete, your SAI Admissions Counselor will schedule a time for a virtual interview. This interview is an opportunity to discuss your goals for the internship, as well as a chance for you to ask any questions you may have about the internship placement process.

SAI Viva Experience

SAI offers all students the Viva Experience: frequent cultural activities, at no extra cost, for participants to get to know their community, city and country. Following is a sample of the activities included in this program. Please note that actual activities may differ.

Passport & Visa

Passports
Passports should be valid for at least 1 year after planned departure from Europe.

Student Visas
In accordance with Spanish law, U.S. students studying in Spain for 90 days or less are not required to obtain a student visa. Therefore all U.S. students do not require a student visa for this program (nor can they apply for one). Non-US nationals should consult their local Consulate for information on student visa requirements.
