Program Overview

Experience a Tuscan summer like no other, in the heart of the Renaissance. Students in FUA’s 3 week summer programs select 1 or 2 courses for an intensive 3 week program. SAI offers four Summer 3 week sessions at FUA, each with different start dates and course options: Summer I, Summer II, Summer III, and Summer IV. Students in the 3 week summer program can also choose to add an optional 1 week course to the start of their program extending their time abroad to 4 weeks.

Academics

Florence University of the Arts (FUA) offers a wide variety of courses designed to give study abroad students a rich and well-rounded education. Courses blend classroom learning with hands-on experiences and experiential learning projects. Students can delve into their academic courses while also engaging with the vibrant history and community of Florence. Students enrolled in the 3 week program also have the option of adding a 1 week course to create a 4 week program.

FUA course registration begins months ahead of the application deadline and is open now. Courses at FUA fill on a rolling basis, and students seeking specific courses are encouraged to apply early.

SAI student apartments offer a comfortable, community-focused living experience in fully equipped spaces. Apartments typically house 2 – 9 students and feature a mix of shared-occupancy and private bedrooms, along with kitchen, bathroom, and a common area. Each unit is move-in ready with essential furnishings, a washing machine, basic kitchen supplies, bed linens, towels, and wireless internet. Housing is arranged as female, male, and, in select locations, gender-inclusive. SAI’s on-site staff are available to promptly assist with any maintenance needs throughout the program.

Private bedrooms in student apartments offer a private bedroom with a shared bathroom. SAI student apartments offer a comfortable, community-focused living experience in fully equipped spaces. Academics & Certificates

Course Registration

Students complete their course registration directly with FUA through the FUA registration portal. Upon confirming enrollment in the SAI program at FUA, students receive information for creating their FUA registration portal and selecting their classes. Note: All courses must meet the minimum enrollment of 12 students to run; therefore, all registrations require selection of an alternate course for each primary course choice.

Courses typically meet Monday – Thursday, with some limited exceptions.

Internships & Experiential Learning

Internships & Special Project Experiential Learning
Students can apply for a part time 3 credit internship or special project experiential learning (SPEL) to be completed as part of the program. Students are placed in field internships that complement their major or minor, and are supported by an internship supervisor & the FUA internship coordinator. While Italian language proficiency is not required, it is helpful for expanding the placement options. At the completion of the internship or SPEL students produce an analytical report that synthesizes what they have learned. For more information on internships see FUA Internships.

Experiential Learning
Many FUA courses incorporate experiential learning components, involving hands-on projects. Courses which include experiential learning components will include this information in the course details & syllabus. Students will work & collaborate within the FUA Community Engagement Member Institutions (CEMI) to fulfill various projects & tasks as part of their coursework. These practical assignments take place on-site and will occur outside of the regular class sessions, with varying shifts assigned from Monday to Friday (occasional weekend shifts possible), including the possibility of later evening hours. Optional 1-Week Course

SAI students enrolled in FUA’s Summer III term are able to add the following 1-week course to the start of their term, to extend their programs by 1 week:

Cultural Introduction to Italy (1 week / 3 credits) – This traveling course gives students the opportunity to delve into Italian culture through lectures, visits to cultural sites, and food tastings. Please note that students enrolled in this program add-on course arrive in Rome on June 21, 2027.

Students can also choose to pair this 1-week course with a corresponding regular summer course to earn 6 credits on the same topic. For more information and full course descriptions see Courses.

SAI Viva Experience

SAI offers all students the Viva Experience: frequent cultural activities, at no extra cost, for participants to get to know their community, city and country. Following is a sample of the activities included in this program. Please note that actual activities may differ.

Passports should be valid for at least 3 months after planned departure from Europe.

Student Visas
In accordance with Italian law, U.S. students studying in Italy for 90 days or less are not required to obtain a student visa. Therefore all U.S. students do not require a student visa for this program (nor can they apply for one). Non-US nationals should consult their local Consulate for information on student visa requirements.
