Hello! My name is Reese. I am a junior studying Finance with a certificate in Legal Studies at The University of Georgia. This was my second time studying abroad, and I knew I wanted to do a better job immersing myself in my host city. To accomplish this goal, I tried many different cuisines and explored various areas of Barcelona, but when presented with the chance to serve the city I called home, I knew it was something I wanted to do. I am thankful that SAI gave me the opportunity to experience the city in a way I wouldn’t have thought of on my own. By working with a local elementary school teaching English and volunteering at a local soup kitchen, I saw a completely different side of Barcelona.
Prior to this opportunity, I had a fair amount of experience working with children of various ages through babysitting and youth sports camps. Because I have always enjoyed teaching and mentoring, I was motivated to join the program offered by SAI. Through the International Service Certificate, I taught sixth grade at Escola Pere Villa, located near the Arc de Triomf. I worked with this group every Wednesday for four weeks and also assisted a third grade class for a week.
During my time in the classroom, my role typically involved leading small group activities where students practiced their English speaking skills. These sessions highlighted a wide range of proficiency levels among the students. When they struggled to understand my questions, I learned to adapt my communication by using visual demonstrations or rephrasing my prompts. If necessary, I would use Spanish to bridge the gap and ensure every student could participate in conversation. Developing this ability to pivot was a highlight of my time at the school, and it is a skill I will certainly use in the future.
I also deeply valued the environment of the classroom itself. The teacher, Ana, fostered a welcoming atmosphere by emphasizing student confidence and attentive listening during class presentations. It was inspiring to see the students so willing to help each other, as it was evident that the classroom was a friendly and collaborative space for learning. I truly enjoyed my experience at Escola Pere Villa and will always cherish the time I spent there, as well as the kind notes the students wrote for me!

Another service opportunity offered through the Certificate was volunteering at a local soup kitchen. During my time there, I helped prepare and serve meals to those in need and assisted with the cleanup after closing. Although I only volunteered twice, I truly wish I could have gone more often. The regular volunteers were incredibly welcoming and took the time to get to know me, and made it clear how passionate they were about their mission. They knew many of the regular visitors and made a point to catch up with everyone who walked through the door.
During both of my visits, the volunteers emphasized that every person seeking help has a unique story, and it is vital to remember that. This experience opened my eyes to a different side of Barcelona and deeply influenced how I view those in need. In a city as large and bustling as Barcelona, it is easy to overlook people in train stations or on the street. However, having the opportunity to hear their stories shifts your everyday perspective on those facing difficult situations. Serving the local community through this organization genuinely captured my heart and provided me with a lesson in empathy that I will never forget.

Reflecting on these experiences, I realize that serving was one of the most impactful parts of my time abroad. Whether I was navigating a language barrier with a sixth grader or connecting to locals at the soup kitchen, I learned that community is built through intentionality and empathy. These opportunities allowed me to go beyond the typical experience of a study abroad student and integrate into pillars of the Barcelona community. Through this program, I am leaving this city with a deeper understanding of how to support others and a drive to continue serving my community into whatever new experience comes next!
