Giving Back, Growing Forward

Ria and I on our first day working at the vegetable garden on the circular farm.

When I first came to Florence, I knew I didn’t just want to exist here, I wanted to be intentional with my time. I wanted to give something back to the community that so kindly welcomed me into it. But more than that, I wanted to learn. Not just observe, but truly experience a different way of living. Working in the circular garden just outside the city of Florence in Scandicci has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my time abroad. What started as a simple opportunity to help the community here turned into something much deeper.

Through planting, harvesting, and even working with recycled coffee grounds to grow mushrooms, I began to understand sustainability in a way I never had before. It stopped being an idea and became something I could feel in my hands. But the most meaningful part hasn’t just been the work, it’s been the people. The laughter, the conversations, the shared moments under the sun. Time feels different there. It slows down. It becomes less about rushing and more about being present.

I came into this experience hoping to make a small difference, but I didn’t expect how much it would change me. I’ve learned about sustainability, yes– but also about community, balance, and what it means to live fully in the moment.
