Between the Duomo and a Dream: How Studying in Florence Changed My Business Perspectives

Walking the cobblestone streets of Florence each morning, I felt like I was stepping into a dream. The warm glow of the sunrise on the Duomo, the buzz of the markets, and the scent of fresh espresso every day brought something new, something magical. I had always heard that studying abroad could be life-changing, but I never expected just how much Florence would shift my perspective.

During my time with SAI, I was challenged to open my mind and slow down. The Italian lifestyle taught me to be present — to enjoy a meal fully, to explore without rushing, and to connect with people on a deeper level. One of my favorite experiences was visiting the Sant’Ambrogio Market, where locals greeted us like old friends. These moments reminded me how powerful community and connection truly are.

Outside the classroom, I found myself inspired in unexpected ways. As a student entrepreneur, I run my own small business back home called Hella Full Catering & Treats LLC. Being in Florence gave me the creative space to reflect, dream bigger, and connect with others who shared my passion. Conversations with artisans, chefs, and fellow students reminded me that building something meaningful takes heart and intention values that I’ve now brought into my business.

One of the most valuable takeaways from my time abroad wasn’t just what I learned in class, but what I discovered about myself. I came back more confident, more centered, and more motivated to create opportunities not just for myself, but for my community. Florence had a way of pulling me out of my comfort zone in the gentlest, most beautiful way. Whether I was helping to cook a traditional Tuscan meal with local ingredients, navigating unfamiliar streets with nothing but a map and curiosity, or translating a menu for my classmates at a hidden gem of a trattoria, I found joy and empowerment in every challenge.

Those small, everyday moments taught me how capable I really am how resilient, adaptable, and open to growth I’ve become. I began seeing myself not just as a student, but as a leader, a connector, and a creative thinker. I realized that I could take those same skills patience, problem-solving, cultural awareness and apply them to my life back home. It made me want to pour into my community, to create spaces where others feel seen and inspired, just like I did in Italy. This experience gave me a clearer vision of my purpose and reminded me that growth often starts with a simple step into the unfamiliar.

If you’re thinking about studying abroad, let me say this from the heart: go for it. This experience will stretch you, challenge you, and shape you in ways you could never plan for and that’s the beauty of it. Florence gave me more than just incredible views and unforgettable food; it gave me lifelong memories, friendships that continue to grow, and the clarity I needed to keep building a life I truly loved one meaningful step at a time.

I’m beyond grateful to SAI for creating a space where I could grow, explore, and discover new sides of myself. This program poured so much into me and I’m thrilled to now give back. I’m incredibly honored to share that I’ve been selected as an Ambassador for the SAI program! This opportunity means the world to me, and I’m excited to keep inspiring other students to take the leap, embrace the journey, and find their path abroad just like I did.

As I continue my education at the University of Mississippi, pursuing a master’s degree in nutrition and hospitality management, I carry everything Florence gave me confidence, curiosity, and a passion for connecting with others into this next chapter. And I can’t wait to see where this journey continues to lead.
