Community in Rome

Exploring a beautiful field in Tuscania with friends.

Meeting new friends while on a hike in Sgurgola, a small medieval town about an hour and a half from Rome.

As this semester comes to an end, I am filled with mixed feelings of excitement to see my family and be home again, yet saddened to say goodbye to my friends and community here in Rome. I am very content with what I have done here so far and wouldn’t go back to change a thing. I want to spend time with the people I’ve met, taking it all in. Although I will miss the beautiful city of Rome, it is the people here who truly matter to me. Whether we are visiting a museum, relaxing in a park, or simply sharing a meal before I must leave.

Remnants of the past

As I look back and reflect on my time here, I would have never been able to create this community I have without putting in the work. Stepping outside your comfort zone is essential, and choosing to study abroad is a major leap in itself—but it doesn’t end there. It’s easy to come here and surround yourself with other native English speakers, creating a second comfort bubble. I encourage you to venture out to local events, places, or neighborhoods where you can engage with the local community and take that extra step beyond familiarity. What you may find is something new and unexpected, and perhaps even make lasting friendships.

Art of The City

Cristo Velato, created by Italian artist Giuseppe Sanmartino in 1753.

In my experience exploring unfamiliar areas, I discovered San Lorenzo, a vibrant student district here in Rome. I’ve found that no matter how different you may be, there is a community for you. At first, it was intimidating and frightening for me, but reflecting on the incredible opportunities I gained and got to experience, it was well worth it. I enjoyed my time here so much that I’ve decided to come back for the fall semester, eager to continue learning the language and dive deeper into the culture.
