Over the past four months, living and volunteering in Florence has taught me more than any classroom could. One of the most meaningful lessons I’ve learned is the value of building relationships with locals and creating a routine that will help your new environment feel like home. I never expected some of the closest friendships I’d form here wouldn’t be with other students, but with Florentines I met just by being a regular at my favorite cafe, restaurant, or neighborhood spot. From the server who always joked with me, and knew my order to the barista who was excited to see me every morning and helped me practice my Italian, these people became my community and allowed me to fully immerse myself in a place not just to visit. Now, when I think of Florence I know that I will be returning back to not just a city but to friends and a second home.

Morocco- This was a bucket list trip that and was hands down the coolest experience of my life. From riding camels through the Sahara to riding ATV’S it felt like I was in a movie.
Another Important piece of advice I would give to any student studying abroad: take at least one solo trip. Before I even arrived, I set a goal to travel alone to Sicily to visit my cousins who I have not seen in 8 years and I did. That trip pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me a boost of confidence and independence. Traveling solo allows you to see things from a whole different perspective. Similar to this idea I can not emphasize enough how important it is to embrace the freedom of doing things solo and not letting other people’s choices dictate your own experiences.

Paris- If 10 year old me knew she would see the Eiffel Tower with her best friend she would not believe me! This was definitely a pinch me moment where I could just sit and stare for hours.
If your friends are not feeling up for a trip or are not wanting to do something you really want to, do it anyway. Waiting for others can mean missing out, it is so important to take time for yourself because it can be a lot to be constantly on the go around a lot of people and places. Take it one day at a time and soak up every second abroad because it really does fly by.

Edinburgh Scotland- this was a trip I was not initially planning on doing but I am so happy I went because it was one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen I felt like I was in a fairytale!!
Thank you Florence and SAI for the most unforgettable four months and for giving me a place to call home even when I will be 4,000 miles away. Ciao for now Firenze, until next time.
