Teaching English While Learning About Italians

Rainbow over the Arno River!

SAI provided me with the opportunity to integrate myself more into the Florence community while studying abroad: teaching English to local elementary school students. I was very grateful for this opportunity. However, I also learned that while I was teaching English, I was also learning the Italian way of life. It made the experience all the more worthwhile.

When I arrived at the school the first day to teach, I realized that the teacher spoke only a small amount of English, and the students could only understand what they knew, plus some popular media information, such as pop stars and superheroes. So, I had to utilize some problem-solving strategies in order to communicate with the teacher and students, and also be able to teach them in a way they could understand and learn from. I used translation apps, but I also practiced learning some words by showing them photos of what I meant, and using hand gestures and expressions, while annunciating my words and saying them slowly. It was very interesting teaching the language I grew up speaking to someone else who doesn’t, but it was still very eye-opening and fun.

I noticed that students were very attentive and free to share their thoughts when they liked, but they also followed structure when needed. I also learned that football (American soccer) is definitely their favorite sport, and they also follow American culture, like WWE, superheroes, pop music, and food. The kids are also very kind and loving; I know most Italians kiss people on the cheek and show PDA, but on my last day with the fifth graders, they all hugged me goodbye, and the teacher hugged me and kissed me on the cheek too. I love that they show their appreciation.

Overall, being able to teach my language and also adapt to a new culture and language was a marvelous experience, and it really helped me to expand as an individual. This was a great opportunity and I am so grateful to have been able to pursue it!
